Yes, he's one of the most infamous serial killers of all time. He murdered prostitutes in the Whitechapel area of London in the late 1800s, and they never caught him. He taunted the police and the press by leaving notes and bragging about what he'd done. To this day there are many theories but no absolute proof about who Jack the Ripper really was. I'm trying to remember if that was a name he came up with himself or something the press called him, but there were some notes signed "Jack". "Ripper" was more because of the way the bodies were mutilated and pretty well destroyed; theories ranged from a deranged doctor to a butcher, and many other people in between.

The best movie on the subject, IMO, is "From Hell" starring Johnny Depp as Scotland Yard's Inspector Abberline, who was in charge of the investigation.

Now you know way more than you wanted to, probably! But hopefully it will clarify how a name even close to "Jack the Ripper" would be hard to live with.
