I was going to start this topic, favorite foreign films, but I am glad I did a search, so lets revive this topic! I hope nobody minds!
My favorites include:
-Winterschläfer (Winter Sleepers)- German, directed by Tom Tykwer who also directed Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run) -Die Fälscher (The Counterfitters)- German, won best foreign film this year at the Oscars, I believe -Goodbye Lenin! - German, such an awesome film! -Das Experiment (The Experiment) - German (noticing a trend haha?) -Kontroll (Control) - Hungarian, this film is AMAZING, a very strange love story which takes place in the underground subway tracks of a Hungarian city, HIGHLY recommended -Caché - French, very, very, VERY strange but very good and extremely interesting
I am sure there are a bunch of others (such as all the Irish, British and Scottish films that Cillian Murphy and James McAvoy have been in! ... which are foreign to me I suppose since I am American) but these are the ones that stand out to me right now!
What about anyone else!?

I like: Battle Royale Y Tu Mama Tambien Pan's Labyrinth Au Revoir Les Enfants and some French movie with this kid and this red balloon that follows him around... I think it's called Le Ballon Rouge. It's like half and hour long.

I like Battle Royale too. My friend was showing it to me on her IPOD but we didn't get to finish watching it.

I love foreign films...when they're good at least. A lot of my faves are foreign.
La Haine (one of the best directed films of all time! I even compare this one to Citizen Kane...it's that insane)
Irreversible Cinema Paradiso He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not The Vanishing (the original) and of course Battleship Potemkin...a classic!
there are a lot more too...can't remember all the good ones I've seen!

Let's see, I looved... 1. Pan's Labyrinth (Spain) - It had great visuals, great story, just great everything. 2. La Vie En Rose (France) - Marion Cotillard's transformation into Edith Piaf was pretty amazing. 3. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (China) - It had the most spectacular fight scenes ever. 4. 2005's The Descent (UK) - I'm not really too much into horror movies, but this one's my favorite after 28 Days Later. It's not only gory scary, but psychologically scary, too. And all of Cillian's Irish and British films, of course!

Hmm, I have never heard of The Descent but from what little you have said about it I am very intrigued. I really like being disturbed when I watch films or read something. Sometimes it can be too much but it is just a really powerful feeling, to feel really disturbed or confused psychologically, haha I guess I myself sound disturbing for desiring to be disturbed ... but my point was I want to check out The Descent now! Das Experiment was relatively disturbing psychologically too. It is a German film but it is based on a REAL experiment in the early 1970s at Stanford University. Students were taken to a prison and split up into two groups, inmates and prison guards, and then left to their own devices. What resulted was an extremely disturbing and incredible psychological experiment in which the students took up their assigned role as prison guards way, way too seriously and brutalized the students assigned the role of prisoners. It is very fascinating to watch what sort of group mentalities and dynamics emerge in these sorts of situations ... especially since you would like to think you, yourself, would never be one of the students who would really brutalize another! I hear that it is rumored that a US version of the film is coming out, called The Stanford Prison Experiment ... while I guess you cannot call the film a remake of the German since it is based on an actual event, I am going to assume that the German version is much, much better. Cache, another of my favorite foreign films, is relatively disturbing at times too and is part of the reason why it is so powerful and frightening and GOOD! I forgot to list the fairly new film The Orphanage as one of my favorite foreign films too, from Spain, this movie was SCARY! Very creepy but very good. I was anticipating being disappointed but it was definitely scary and definitely good! The ending was a total shock too!

Sorry about not expanding more about The Descent, kaatopp. Here's pretty much what's it's about, taken from its wikipedia page: " The Descent is a 2005 British horror film, written and directed by Neil Marshall. The story concerns a group of friends on a caving expedition only to find themselves trapped and hunted by inhuman creatures." Here's the trailer of it: youtube.com/watch?v=l5I1q4KhKNU . It's pretty much a generic horror film, but the way it was filmed - to me, that's what set it apart from other horror films. You should check it out. *EDIT* Kaatopp, if you do see The Descent, see the original, unrated director's cut version - this one has the better ending than the one shown in U.S. theaters. Oh, and don't confuse this film with the Rosario Dawson rape/revenge film of the same name. Oooh, I was just going to ask about The Orphanage when I was posting about Pan's Labyrinth because they're both produced by the same producer. It looks really good and really creepy - I like. I'm definitely going to check it out!

I love foreign films, especially Asian films. I'll divide them by country. JapaneseBattle Royale Anything by Hayao Miyazaki Audition Ichi the Killer Gozu Ringu Three Extremes - Box KoreanMy Sassy Girl Oldboy Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance Three Extremes - Cut OthersVor (The Theif; Russian) Three Extremes - Dumplings (Chinese; I'll warn you, this might put you off dumplings for a while) The Dreamers (French/English) Ma Mere (French) Pan's Labryinth (Spanish) A lot of the movies I watch tend to be really messed up. I wonder if there's anything inherently wrong with me...

I know what you mean Kizuna! I went on a weird French film kick once and each film was more disturbing than the last! I was starting to wonder what was wrong with me!
I think I have heard about Oldboy, something about some guy being locked up in a room, or something and then avenging a murder of some sort. I know that is a really horrible, and probably inaccurate, description of the movie, but if we are talking about the same movie it sounded really cool, scary and messed up!
And Rukia, I never saw Pan's Labyrinth but The Orphanage is fantastic!! You HAVE to see it!

Yeah, that's the gist of Oldboy. It's about this guy who gets randomly kidnapped and locked up in solitary confinement for several years until he's released and he's given a week to find the guy who did it and why. The ending is so absolutely messed up and kind of depressing, like most of Park Chan-Wook's films tend to be.

I wonder if there's anything inherently wrong with me... Hmm, you really do have a taste for the disturbing, Kizuna. I haven't seen Audition in its entirety, but I did read up on the plot and everything. I've watched the beginning, the middle, skipped that one infamous scene because I didn't want to be sick to the stomach, skipped the torture scene, and watched the ending. Yeah, there are some things that I can't bear to watch, and that includes torture. I'm a chicken, I know. Good story though and great leading actress! I think I've seen Ringu (I get it mixed up with Ju-On for some reason). Anyway, if I remember correctly, I believe I didn't like it as much as the American remake, The Ring. Somehow, I found The Ring to be scarier. Naomi was awesome in it, of course! The Ring's the best of the J-Horror film remakes so far, in my opinion, and just thinking about it gives me the creeps. I couldn't sleep well for a couple of days after I saw it. Yeah, again, I'm a chicken, I know. Ju-On, on the other hand, I liked more than the American remake, The Grudge. The Grudge just didn't make sense with the Americans being in Japan; I think it would've been better if it was set in America. Oldboy, I've heard of. I know about the whole plot twist and everything, and that kind of disturbed me, so I decided to pass on that. Isn't there an anime based on it, too? I think that's how I first heard of it. Speaking of anime, I loved Grave of the Fireflies. It never fails to make me cry. Oh, and have you seen the Korean film, A Tale of Two Sisters? It's not really too disturbing but creepy nonetheless. There's an upcoming American remake for it, too... sigh, people just don't learn do they? Since I see that you're a fan of Takashi Miike, have you seen Imprint? I came across it when I was reading up on the Masters of Horror series. Haven't seen it (no surprise), but it sounds really disturbing and scary. As you can see, I like reading up on disturbing films (curiosity gets the best of me, I guess), but I can't really seem to gather the guts to actually see them.

Rukia (and anyone else who may be interested) I found a link to The Orphanage in Spanish with English subtitles (which is how I saw the film in theater). It is in two parts, on VeohTV: www.veoh.com/videos/v6428690wRyTkgprwww.veoh.com/videos/v6428693R3aPkKkCRukia, if you watched WTD on VeohTV, which ashleyrose linked us to, you should have the program downloaded already. These links above will only take you to a five minute clip of the first and second parts. So after you click on the link to watch whichever part you are ready for, you have to look to your right and click the orange button that says "Watch on VeohTV" ... if you don't have VEOH downloaded, you will have to download it first, which doesn't take much time or effort. After that the film should download fairly quickly and you can enjoy The Orphanage!!
