Why is an actor getting work "selling out?"
I think that if you want to do something and want to experience different possibilities with your work, or life in general, then you are selling out yourself not to do it just because others claim that you are "selling out." It's great to do what you love as a living. $$$
I would much rather him get roles that would allow him to do something he is passionate about than for him to go back to law school (or something of the sort). Having a role in Batman Begins will not define his entire career--I'm sure he'll still do lower budget films & indies if the scripts interest him. He will be well-rounded in his craft.

I'm not saying he did! But I personally prefer him in the more artsy/indie roles he had been doing up till Batman (On The Edge, 28 Days Later, Disco Pigs, Intermission). Just my own little thang. "Action movie" just doesn't scream Cillian to me.

I know what you mean Leslie, but thankfully I get the impression that he's not terribly interested in the level of fame that manufactured mega stardom brings with it - he doesn't like talkshows etc, does he? As Puggems says above, a well-rounded career means a bit of everything. If he keeps doing only quaint little "smell of an oily rag" productions with his mates, then no one will know he exists after a while and he'll stop getting work. Worse, he'll get typecast as the Irish intense nutter - "he comes cheap, can do accents, will do nudity, yep, get that Kieran Murphy guy." I don't think a medium sized part in a blockbuster will taint him for life. I don't see him flogging BMWs or Pepsi any time soon. He better not anyway, LOL! Cheers ~Ultra

lol I totally agree. lol I guess maybe I'm just sad his role is the Scarecrow. ;D I mean, if he wears that mask thingy most of the movie, we'll hardly ever get to see his pretty face! But I shouldn't complain. At least we get to see him at all! Plus I think Red Eye looks pretty good (though I wish for once the bad guy would win in that one ). I just hope it isn't too much like Scream.

As much as I'd like for him to not sell out, I would like him to play various roles --- character roles especially. It seems him playing that psycho kidnapper in Red-Eye is a bit type-casting, don't you think? How many times will he play that dark, brooding, maniacal psycho? (Though, he really is darling as that! ;D) Yeah, BB is huge, but it seems he's still grounded: after filming BB, he went straight into filming Breakfast On Pluto, and that's considered a small indie film. He's choosing his roles wisely and we'll definitely see a well-rounded career for this boy!

I agree with you guys, Cillian is a brilliant actor who definitely knows what he's doing. As for him doing Batman we'll I love it, he's finally coming to America! and like he said how could he pass it up? its a boy's dream! Plus its not like he's playing some cheesy character like The Riddler. The Scarecrow is dark and mysterious, and I am sure will be played perfectly by our favorite eye candy.

Um...Who's Kieran Murphy? This is a Cillian Murphy forum! That's Ultra's point, that filmakers won't know, or care what his name is if he doesn't make an effort to put himself out there. I think that he is balancing his roles well, and hey, isn't it okay to play a villian, or a psycho, if he is also portraying a transvestite, as well? How many other young male actors would take on that risky role? This is a hard industry, and I think the scripts he is getting and accepting are great. I mean, come on, I like Over the Edge just as well as the rest of you, but was it successful? No. He would be foolish and arrogant to turn down the films he has recently took parts in, and I know he is neither a fool, nor has an air of "God's gift" to the industry. (Even though we do a bit of worshipping! )
