Chapter 5

Jim and Selena continued to live through their own bliss, each comforted by the other's prescence. Selena was warm and at peace wrapped in Jim's strong embrace. How could she ever be mad at him? He obviously loved her very much and would do anything for her. She rested her head on his shoulder and was silent for a moment. Jim ruffled her hair lovingly, and Selena looked up.

"What do we do now, Jim? You know we can't stay here... because --"

"More infected will come." Jim finished Selena's sentence, smiling, despite the grim situation. "We should find a safe place, somewhere where there won't be too many infecteds. Where we can have a fresh start. Maybe the countryside."

Just me and Selena...

Selena seemed to be thinking along the same lines as Jim, and she smiled. "You stole my thought." Jim laughed and pushed her playfully. She grinned and gave him a quick kiss, and took his hand in hers. They stared out at the gloom that lay before them, then began to get in the car.

The eyes were still watching them, a struggle going on inside. Every instinct in the being's body told it to lunge forward, to attack the healthy humans, but a voice inside it's head held it back.

Why do you want to attack them? You get nothing out of it...

The being gave a low growl, it's body telling it to move, to satisfy its appetite for violence. For blood. Yet it couldn't move, it wouldn't. There was a raging battle going on inside its head, and it stood there, unsure.


Jim turned they key in the slot, the car engine sputtering to life. He turned to Selena, tipping an imaginary hat.

"Where to, Miss?" He chuckled playfully. Selena grinned.

"Anywhere Babe Ruth decides."

Jim looked back, backing the car up slowly.

The roar of the taxi flipped a switch in the being's mind. It stepped out from it's hiding spot, directly in line with the car. It stood there breathing heavily, breaths coming out in loud raspy sounds. It's blood red eyes were locked on the car, and its fingers twitched in anticipation. The humans were near.

Jim turned back around, to see Selena's eyes locked on something ahead of them. He followed her line of sight with his eyes, and saw what she was staring at in horror.

Hannah.

"Selena, don't watch." Jim said, his voice wavering. He put his hand over Selena's eyes, blocking out her sight completely. He put his foot on the acceleration, and started to press down. The car started to go faster and faster, straight towards Hannah.

Hannah watched the car coming closer and closer. Her body tensed, ready to spring at the humans coming closer. She wanted to bite them, to shred at them, to cause them pain. The Rage bubbled through her veins, she wanted to get to them. But as the car came closer, she recognized the drivers. Her eyes clouded over, turning to a steely gray, but still with a tint of red. She instinctively stepped backwards, getting out of the way of the car.

Jim slammed on the brakes as Hannah moved, to stop himself running into a pile of metal. He heisitated for a moment, trying to figure out what to do next. The infected Hannah on one side, ready to spring, and trembling Selena on the other, who had no idea what was going on. He was about to swerve the car into Hannah, when Hannah stepped towards him, shaking violently. She struggled for a minute, then went still, looking almost normal.

"Jim?"

WHAT HAPPENS!!!!!!!!!!! cool, we never got an insight on what the infected thinks or feels, good chapter! ;D

Guess i'm crossing the 28 DL fic line in this story, having Hannah and an infecteds mind all at once ;D

Chapter 6


"Jim?"

It can't be. Hannah was dead. I watched her die. She couldn't have survived that.

"Jim, what's going..." Selena mumbled, pulling Jim's hand away from her eyes.

Jim scrutinized Hannah, trying to wrap his head around the situation. Here was Hannah, looking almost normal. But if she wasn't dead, she had to be infected. But she was talking to him, she recognized him. Infecteds couldn't talk.

There was that one boy...

Suddenly Hannah gave a violent shudder and her eyes flashed red, and Jim recoiled. Then she went still again, her eyes returning to their reddish gray. She took a heisitating step towards the car.

"Jim... Selena... I don't understand..."

Jim shrunk back in his seat a bit, still questioning Hannah's health. Selena, however, leaned forward.

"Hannah... can you hear me?"

Hannah nodded.

"Um... how are you?" Selena asked, as though it was any other day.

Hannah closed her eyes in thought, then looked up at the sky.

"I don't know. I don't understand... I can barely remember... I remember the infecteds coming... I know I was bitten... But what's going on in me now? I can control myself, but I'm fighting the urge to attack.... I want to hurt you, but I... I don't..." She trailed off, knowing it didn't make any sense to the already confused Jim and Selena.

"I mean... I..." Frustration built up in Hannah's mind, and she started to feel off.

Why can't these idiots understand me? I'm being perfectly clear...

Hannah's frustration started to turn into anger, and her blood started to boil. The anger took over her, she wanted to hurt these people. Kill them. These people didn't deserve to live. Her eyes misted over, back to red, and she gave out an unearthly shriek.

"Jim, back the car up!" Selena screamed.

Jim backed the car up just in time, as Hannah lunged towards them. She stopped abruptly, standing and writhing in one spot, her hands clawing the air. Jim and Selena watched her, breathing heavily from the sudden shock.

"What the f*ck is going on?" Jim asked, looking over at Selena. Selena was mumbling to herself, and Jim could hear the words "blood" and "plague". He coughed politely, to get her attention, and she snapped back into reality.

"I think I know." She said slowly. "I think I know."

Jim looked at her, waiting, but she didn't say anymore. "Well?..."

Selena took a deep breath, and began her story.

"Many years ago, a terrible disease struck the world. Some people called it Bubonic Plague, some the Black Death, now people call it the Black Plague. It was very similar to this, this infection now. It came from Asia, from rats that had stolen aboard ships and reached Europe. It spread quickly, through towns and cities all over Europe, infecting many and killing millions. There was death everywhere, people were hiding from others, everyone afraid of becoming infected."

"Like us." Jim commented.

"Yeah, like us. People thought it was the end of the world. Just about everyone who caught it died within a week. Yet there were a few people, people who survived the sickness even though they too were infected. They got the same symptoms and problems as people who were also infected with the disease, but when it came to dying, the death never came. A few years ago, scientists developed and tested a theory, a theory they developed from studying the Black Plague. It seemed that everyone who survived the symptoms of the Black Plague had the genetic mutation that they call Delta 32. It kept them from dying from the disease. Do you get where I'm going with this?" Jim nodded.

"You think Hannah has it?" He asked, watching Hannah writhe and fight with herself in front of them.

"Something like it... Like another type maybe, a Delta 33. She's been infected, but she can switch between infected and normality in her mind..."

Jim looked on, slowly taking in the words that Selena was saying.

"I think something has to set her off, before she slips back into the infected stage...."

History lesson and Chapter 6 combined How fun. That stuff about Delta 32 is actually true you know...

Thanks for the exalt!;D Yeah I learned that all in History and the first thing I thought of was 28 DL... So I guess that lesson was my inspiration

very cool, what grade are you in? I wonder when there going to teach us about that.

I'm in 9th, but I take Honors European History. And my teacher likes to teach us the little things like that because he finds a way to gross us out that would be cool if you learned about it though.. You would instantly think of Jim ;D
