Well, bless my stupidity. I've had this chapter finished since November...Sorry about that wait!
Here's chapter 2 of Oblivion.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She felt him kneel behind her, one arm wrapped around her waist, the other arm reaching up so his hand could fist in her hair and pull the red-brown locks out of her face. She did not look at him, could not; her concentration was focused solely on the toilet in front of her as she wretched and tried to stop.
Soothing motions from his hand on her stomach slowly and steadily calmed her down, and in the back of her confused mind it still amazed her that someone like Jackson could be so impossibly gentle with her. How he knew what to do, she didn’t know; maybe he’d had numerous girlfriends. With his gorgeous features, it really couldn’t have been all that hard for him to get one or many.
As an assassin, he likely knew many languages. Obviously English…but she could also imagine him speaking French, and probably languages like German and Spanish as well. Russian even. So he could pop into some random city, seduce a girl with his charms as he had her, and then sweep her off her feet. Party with her for a while. Tease her, spoil her, and make her feel loved. Make all the girl’s friends jealous that she had chanced luckily enough upon some marvelous guy.
Only to find out later that this man was a killer, and had seduced the girl only in order to get closer to her. To get information from her for a client, and then follow whatever the orders the client gave. Like killing her.
Her stomach had calmed almost completely up until that point, but at the thought that Jackson was twisting her mind again she began to dry heave. But nothing left her stomach, as there was nothing left in it to empty. Instead, her eyes once again emptied small and streaming tears. She was frantic now, almost to the point of hysteria.
Jackson Rippner was a top assassin. He had blue coloured eyes, dark brown hair, and pale skin. He was perhaps shorter than average by most standards. He was a lousy shot(but still better than most), and impressive with a knife. Cunning. Daring. Calculating. Calm. Handsome.
And that was all she knew. Truly, she couldn’t believe him when he said he would never lie. She couldn’t believe that his name was even Jackson Rippner. Though given at his dislike to the nickname Jack, it could be. But again, that disgusted expression at the name Jack could be a false face to make her believe he really had such an oddity for a name.
Oh, but it fit. Jack the Ripper. Jack the Ripper. Jack the Ripper…. The words were chanted over and over again in her head. And now instead of crying and heaving the contents of her stomach, there was crying and laughing desperately, hysterically.
Her sweet oblivion was gone from her. All that remained was this confused hell she could not escape from on her own.
Jackson was completely stiff against her for a long while, and then she felt him move away from her. Deep inside her, she resented the loss of contact, but her confusion quickly pushed the feeling aside. She heard water running in the sink for a few moments, and then idly noticed him place some things on the floor next to her. Again he was kneeling behind her, one arm wrapped around her waist.
“You’re scaring me, Leese.” He murmured in her ear, not unkindly. She felt a warm washcloth being put to her lips, wiping away the bile from her mouth and face. And then came a glass filled with water, cold water, which he commanded her to drink to wash out her mouth and then spit out.
She obeyed, fear setting into her being, the confusion fading to being numb.
The slow pattern continued of her drinking and spitting to rinse out her mouth, and he spoke to her the whole time. His voice contained the same puzzlement she had heard earlier while they’d been on her bed. “What has you so scared? So strange, so strange…” He brought the glass to her lips so she could drink again. “On the red eye, threats on your life and your father’s didn’t make you back down. It was as if your own life wasn’t important as long as the Keefe’s lived…” He paused. “And now, only your life is really threatened…And you’re not alone. I’m here to protect you…And yet you’re hysterical with fear.” The glass now empty, she heard him place it back on the floor with a ‘clink’. His other arm came around her waist, and he pulled her backwards, unfolding her legs from under her. He now sat against the wall, and she against his chest. Her eyes remained fixated on the wall ahead of her blankly, merely listening to his voice.
When had she been reduced to this?
“You have to trust me.” Jackson murmured into her ear, before adjusting his chin so that it came to rest on the top of her head.
“…I can’t do that.” And she couldn’t. She had no reason to.
“Think about it. You don’t have a choice. I’m the only shot you have at surviving.”
And now suddenly anger. If her emotions kept doing this, she’d be mentally and emotionally exhausted in no time. Lisa felt like she was already.
“You could be lying about that.”
“Have I ever lied to you?”
“Not yet…but who knows? I had you shot, ruined your assassination, had you tried and convicted, killed your accomplice…” She paused for a few moments. “…Stabbbed you in the throat with a Frankenstein pen…”
He growled softly at the mention of the pen, but she continued anyway, feeling suddenly braver despite being trapped in his arms.
“Maybe the fact that I must have royally pissed you off made you decide that killing me, toying with me, is worth it…” She blinked when she realized how bitter she sounded.
There was a sigh from him in response. “There’s no proof I can give you.”
She let herself relax against his body, and she felt his grip around her tighten in an almost possessive way around her waist. “I know.”
“Then why get upset?” Exasperation now. “Why be afraid?”
“Because I could stand dying.” The statement came from her lips before she could stop them, and figured she might as well continue now. Her pride was already shattered. “..But dying inside, emotionally again…That would be worse. It is worse.”
She began remembering the scar again.
“…I won’t hurt you like that.” Jackson replied after a moment, perhaps (and hopefully) after having thought over what she said.
“You might, Jackson…you might. Not even you can predict the future.” Came her exhausted reply. She turned and curled up against him more, secretly happy that he was still shirtless. And secretly she was still disgusted by these thoughts, but they seemed to be part of some sweet oblivion of numbness and nothingness.
Oh yes. There was definitely something wrong with her. A little voice was laughing in her head at her stupidity. ‘First you throw up because you thought of him, and now you’re curled up against him like a lover!’ It taunted.
Something very wrong with her. But she ignored the voice and shoved it back away. Oblivion was slowly coming back as she rested like this in his arms. He could kill her at any time. But there was a strange sort of safety here like this that she hadn’t had in years. A person who was capable of protecting her, though wouldn’t necessarily do so…but it didn’t matter. It in a way chased away memories of the man in the parking lot. It made her feel on edge, but oddly safe. Because this was Jackson Rippner, and he was unpredictable. But also predictable to her in so many ways….
“You are the strangest person I’ve ever met.” He stated blandly, ruining her little mental moment.
“Same goes to you.”
