It was a dull night and he could feel himself getting restless with the whole bloody thing, the false talk, fake smiles and over all ceremonial bullsh*te of the evening had really worn him down. Having to be nice to every one all the time with out even a decent drink to help ease the pains of industry duties wasn’t making anything easier. He had managed to avoid most of the picture hungry photographers out front, and surprisingly the Q&A period after the viewing was short and sweet, the gods where being fair but not kind. Every quota had been filled for the night, now if there was only some way to slip out from the rest of the events “gayity” and have a nice quite evening he’d be set..
He wandered through the shoulder to shoulder crowed, making his way to the patio that had been set up on the landing upstairs. It was empty, for the most part, one or two people in corners, getting away from the chaos downstairs. He places his hand on the back of his neck, letting his head roll side to side letting loose some of the tension from the nights event. He took in a nice deep breath and caught a sharp sweet smoke smell off the night breeze. The corner of his mouth curled in a smirk. He scanned the patio to find the source of that old familiar smell. Across the way in one of the corners a young woman was leaning up against the railing taking a drag from a clove she had curled between her fingers.
He bit his lip and put his hands in his slack pockets looking to the ground and kicking at an invisible rock he had found. It’d been a good long while since he’d had a clove, it would be a compromise for the lack of decent Guiness, but would it be worth the possible hassle that could come with asking said young lady across the way? “Feck it “
He casually wandered over towards her direction, she didn’t even notice him walking up. “Ah, pardon? Could I get one of those off of you?” She saw him for the first time an was startled then taken aback, he could tell, he’d seen it a million times by now, her eyes had opened a bit wider and her shoulders went rigged. Sh*te, Hassle.... She looked to a near by chair and her shoulders dropped and she took a quick breath. “Sure.” She recovered gracefully with out even a bat of an eyelash. She didn’t mention his name, she didn’t gush, just reached into the pocket of her jacket that had been resting on the back of the chair and pulled out a engraved cigaret case which she clicked open and presented to him. He couldn’t help but smile at her rather formal presentation. He leaned in a bit and slipped a clove from the case, still bent a bit almost taking a small bow he smiled up at her. “Cheers.” She clicked the case closed and turned back placing it into her coat pocket. He had brought out his lighter and flicked it, once... twice... Piece of... No spark.
“Need a light?” She held out a lit zippo to him. It had similar scroll work as the case, he smiled even a bit wider this time letting a bit of a chuckle slip. “Thank you again.” He leaned in cupping her hand in his and lit the end of the clove till it was a bright red at the tip. It cast a warm glow on his face, he looked up and smiled before letting her hand and lighter go.
“No problem.” She had stammered a bit on her words. He wasn’t sure, it could have been from the flame but he could swear she was blushing as she turned back to her coat and deposited the lighter with it’s mate. She went back to her own clove leaning up against the railing very casually, and now obviously avoiding any looks in his general direction.
He was impressed, curious, and now felt slightly challenged by her obvious dismissal. She knew who he was, he had no doubts about it, especially after the deer in the head lights she gave him when he first approached her. His duel nature was getting the better of him. If he was stuck here for a while he might as well find something amusing to do, and chatting this girl up might be just the thing to help pass the time. He took her in studying her a bit. She was dressed stylishly in men’s black pin striped slacks that had obviously been tailored to fit, a white collard dress shirt neatly tucked, three bottons undone showing off a pendent that she kept playing with from time to time. The members only black leather coat that lay over the chair finished off the whole outfit with a bit of “Euro Sheik”. He watched her a few minutes, she never looked over but did keep playing with the pendent that rest just in the nape of her neck. He was bout quarter way through his smoke when he went to flick the ash and lost the cherry off the end instead. “Feck sake,” That caught her attention. He shrugged. “Don’t suppose I could bum another light off you?” She smiled. “Yeah, sure no problem...” She lit his smoke again and put the lighter in her slack pocket this time. He nodded. He let a second pass before trying to strike up the conversation again. “So, did you enjoy the show?” She was in the middle of a drag, and a bit surprised by his question. She paused to exhale the smoke before she would answer. “By show are you referring to the actual film, or the circus going on downstairs?” He laughed. Promising? She was witty, this was proving to be just the entertainment he was looking for.
“Not your kind of party then?”
She scrunched her nose a little and shook her head. “No, guess I was just expecting a bit more.”
“Your first time at a premier then?” He watch her shift her body a little, she was facing him now.
“Yes, and no. It’s my first time, in this sort of capacity.”
He raised a brow, “ That sounds serious?”
She smiled at that one. “Ya I guess it could, but then again it depends on how you look at it?”
Careful boy, He straightened up a bit preparing for a hasty retreat.
“Really and how would you look at it?”
She shrugged and took another dag, “how ever I suppose?”
He was going to have to get a bit more to the point, he took a moment to find the right way to put it.
“So are you with one of the crews downstairs then?”
She frowned and recoiled a bit as she had just smelled a skunk. “No. God no. I’m just here for the novelty.”
He relaxed again after hearing that, the reaction was priceless to him. He putt an elbow on the railing and rested his chin in the heel of his hand, finger tips brushing the bottom of his lip. “Well must kind of piss ya off, paying out that kind of cash, expecting it be one thing, and having it turn out to be this?”
She smirk and raised and eyebrow at him. “Well I could be, but now? Well I wouldn’t call it a complete bust, besides I never said anything about paying to get in here?”
Now he was very curious, he couldn’t help the broad smile that took to his face just then.
“So am I to understand that in standing here and continuing to carry on this conversation, I could be aiding and embedding a possible criminal act?”
Her eyes rolled off to the side a little, as she sheepishly bit her lip, before giving him a wonderfully devilish grin. “Those are some pretty fancy words, one might even suspect that you had studied law using terms like that?” She raised an eye brow...
He had to laugh at her settle form of recognition.
“Yea one might just think that wouldn’t they?” He let another soft laugh come up again. It was settled in his mind now, she was safe.
“Well either way,” He took the last drag from his smoke and let it drop to the patio and stamped it out. “Your secret is safe with me.....” She caught his beat and waited while he let the last little bit of smoke curl round his shoe, he titled his crystal blues up at her though heavy lashes. “.......if you’d be willin’ to share it with me that is?”
She sighed and shook her head. “I don’t know? It’s a pretty good little secret. How do I know I can trust you?” She raised a single eyebrow and smiled. He stood up straight and drew a cross over his heart and the scouts salute in the air. “Cross my heart.” She laughed the dimples at the corners of her lips grew deeper and deeper as he stood there till she broke her gaze from him.
“Well since you put it that way, how can a girl say no?”
He took a step towards her closing in the gap a bit and extended his hand out to her.
“I’m Cillian”
She defiantly blushed that time letting her hand slip into his.
“I’m Amber, it’s nice to meet you.” She paused and looked at him quizzically “ Cillian was it?”
A coy smile on her face, still maintaining a bit of the game. He smirked again, c*cky he could appreciate that. Yes this was going to be just what he needed to get him through the night.
