The rule: If you have nothing to bring to a song, THEN DON'T REMAKE IT. Simple.
The culprit: Gary Jules and his whiny, what-the-hell-am-I-singing remake of "Mad World," which plays over that fabulously irritating and inescapable cinema ad for "Gears of War."
The problem: Being old yet sharp enough to remember the pop culture of my distant youth. Y'know, back when records were not only records, they were pressed on stone and not on vinyl. Tears for Fears' version of "Mad World" is just as, um, sensitive as Mr. Jules', yet it has drive to it and a strong beat as well. Frankly, it's a great-sounding song.
The solution: Say it with me, marketing folks: ORIGINALS ARE USUALLY BETTER. The original artist wrote the song because he or she had something to say. Nine times out of ten, remake people are doing their thing because they don't have anything to say.
And originals, I would think, would be cheaper, rights-wise. Especially those originals pressed on stone. Just don't drop 'em on your foot.

I like Gary Jules version,i think the "whiny" version suits the lyrics. I like covers, they introduce a new audience to old classic songs, meaning more people can enjoy them.

I like Gary Jules version,i think the "whiny" version suits the lyrics. I like covers, they introduce a new audience to old classic songs, meaning more people can enjoy them. But with re-issues (and great re-mastering techniques) so widely available, the old versions in many cases are still with us-- and they're often better than they were in the first place. (For a very nice example of this, check out Brian Eno and John Cale's "Wrong Way Up" album.) Which oftentimes makes re-makes even more redundant. But I do love Low's cover of John Denver's "Back Home Again." Y'know, though, one album where they (the amorphous "they") got the remake thing right was "I Wish I Were a Carpenter." Redd Kross turn "Yesterday Once More" into a full-on arena rockout, and Shonen Knife's punk take on "Top of the World" is an absolute killer. Just saying: if you're gonna do a cover, bring something new to it! Unless you're Marilyn Manson-- in which case you can leave "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" well enough alone!

I HATE stupid remakes. I can understand developing bands starting out with them and all, but when you hit it big, DON'T SING SOMEONE ELSE'S MATERIAL.
Like I was watching tv the other day and this commercial for Macy's was playing. This, like, RAP group had done a remake of From Me To You by the Beatles. It was horrible and I felt incredibly offended that they'd insulted the Beatles like that.

Any remake with Jessica Simpson. "Take My Breath Away", "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" and "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)". I like the originals WAY better!

Jessica can't make remakes at all.
For me it wasn't a cover but at a concert I saw on you tube where Metallica did cover of "One of these days" By Pink Floyd and Just KILLED it. I wanted to cry

I heard the most horrible version of Mrs. Robinson by the Lemonheads today.
It. Was. So. Monotone.
God bless you, Simon and Garfunkel.

I love Mrs. Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel so dang much. I'd refuse to listen to any different version. Yes, I'm close minded with classics, haha. I just love the beginning. Doo doo doo doo do-doo doo doo... Here's to you, Mrs. Robinson-- I'll stop. Ughh, can't stand Jessica Simpson. I have like a total Anti-Paris Hilton, Anti-Jessica Simpson, Anti- Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan thing going on. Though I did love Mean Girls, but mostly for the SNL gals and Rachel McAdams.

So uhm. First off, I love Radiohead and their "Karma Police" song. A while back I was really into Panic! At the Disco, and discovered they did a cover of "Karma Police." When I first heard about it, I was like "This is gonna suck." And so when it came to me listening to it, I'm sorry, but it wasn't half bad! Ha, I guarentee a lot of people HATE the job they've done. I'm not here to say they did an awesome job or a horrible job. But they did a happy medium to my standards. you can listen/watch it here on youtube: youtube.com/watch?v=wXhtX_xjRBc

I actually listened to Tokio Hotel's cover for the song Instant Karma originally by John Lennon. Now, I may be biased (as I'm already a fan of TH), but I actually didn't think their cover was half bad. Of course, Bill Kaulitz's voice isn't the best suited for a song like Instant Karma, but he really did commit himself to this whole thing and that's good for me. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nG5EQrdb1AU
