Favorite instrumental soundtracks: "Conan the Barbarian" (especially the bass clarinet line toward the end of the final track); "Sphere" and "Alien 3" ('cause Eliot Goldenthal can out-Shostakovich Shostakovich); "The Empire Strikes Back"; and "Alien" (the one time an editorial overwrite was a good idea: ditching Goldsmith's original ending and modulating to a major key with the excerpt from Hanson's Symphony No. 2). And the final track on "The Mummy."
Favorite musical soundtracks: The American cast recording of "Chess"; the OBC "Les Miserables"; the OBC "Phantom of the Opera" (and the non-Andrew LLoyd Webber "Phantom," which is criminally underproduced); and the original cast recordings of "My Fair Lady" and "Camelot" and the soundtrack to "The Sound of Music." You can't top Julie Andrews on a good day. You just can't.
Favorite pop soundtracks: "Red Planet," "Kill Bill," and (not to be biased or anything!) "28 Days Later."
Favorite pieces that could have been soundtracks if movies had been invented then: Just about any symphony by Gustav Mahler. Numbers 2, 3, 6, 8, and 10, especially. If Mahler were alive today, Peter Jackson would be all over him like a cheap suit. Music that is EPIC. GLORIOUS. AND VERY, VERY LONG.

One more; just reminded: the soundtrack to "Metropolis," from 1928. The original orchestral score is astonishing. And to think they rounded up a whole orchestra to play it at the Palast am Zoo in Berlin--! Too bad no one's committed it to [an accessible, legally available] CD. But I did just buy Sound Studio 3. Hmmmm....
