Our town is to be film set

A KILKENNY town is set to become the centre of the film world this Autumn.
Over a six to eight week period, starting in September, a crew of up to 100 people will be based in Callan providing a major boost for the local economy.
The feature film, directed by Oscar winner, Neil Jordan, is based on a novel by Patrick McCabe called, Breakfast On Pluto.
Jordan visited the town last week with a number of his production team and was very impressed.
And Dermot Cleary of Parallel Productions in Dublin was in the town yesterday (Tuesday) making tentative arrangements for the film shoot.
In a remarkable coincidence the leading actor on the film, Cillian Murphy, is getting married to a Kilkenny girl in a few weeks time.
He will wed Yvonne McGuinness, daughter of Gabriel McGuinness, Lacken Mill, Maudlin Street at Mr McGuinness’s Domaine de Anges vineyard, Provence, deep in the South of France.
After the honeymoon it will be straight back to work in Kilkenny for Cillian, accompanied by his new bride.
The baddie
The 30-year-old star of films, Disco Pigs and Intermission, will play the baddie in the next Batman film to be shot in 2005 and will play alongside Liam Neeson, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman.
It is understood that negotiations on using the old Catholic presbytery behind the Church of the Assumption, Callan, for the Jordan film, are ongoing.
The crew also want to use the church. No decision has been taken on this request.
Much of the film action will be set on Bridge Street with film bosses believing that it has changed little from the 1970s during which period the film is set.
The film is based on the Booker Prize nominated novel, Breakfast on Pluto.
It revolves around a
foster child Patrick “Kitten” Brady who grows up in a small town in Ireland.
He emigrates to London, where he is reborn as a 1970s transvestite cabaret singer.
It is of the same genre as McCabe’s earlier novel, The Butcher Boy, which was also turned into a film by Neil Jordan.
The anticipated arrival of the film crew has created a buzz in the area.
“We will welcome anything which shows up Callan in a positive light,” Cllr Tom Maher of Kilkenny Co Council said.
“We will try to ensure that the crew are accommodated in every way possible during filming,” he added.
The last major film shot in Kilkenny was Widow’s Peak (1994), set in Inistioge and Circle of Friends (1995), also filmed in Inistioge.
