WOW WOW WOW If this gets made and Cillian is in it, I would be incredibly excited. I remember this heart-breaking true-life story very well, and personally I think Cillian would be outstanding in this role. He's head and shoulders above most other actors to begin with, but he also has an ability to convey fear and pain that I have yet seen equalled by anyone else... it's unique to him and I think qualifies him completely for this. And the thought of having him as THE STAR of something to this degree, after several years of being off to the side in some of his movies or part of ensembles... well, this is so exciting that I am probably setting myself up to be disappointed if he is not cast. My only other concern is that Boyle will again employ his shaking camera technique; I can only hope he won't see the need for it in this film. WOW. This could be an incredible, gut-wrenching movie - I hope Cillian gets the part!!

How is this "heartbreaking"? Ralston was voluntarily performing a risky recreational activity all by himself, he didn't let anyone know where he might be, and he almost got himself killed. In short, he was behaving recklessly, and he nearly lost his life as a result. (Contrast this scenario with, say, a firefighter acting in the course of his or her duty who gets pinned by debris trying to save someone from a burning building.) At best, Ralston's story sounds like prime Darwin Awards material, not like some grand portrait of courage. And, with the screaming, flailing, creative pliers work, and drinking of urine, it comes off as sickening as well. Yes, he's the king of portraying pain, but I think Cillian could do better than this.

Yeay Pisces! Haven't heard from you in a while! Good to see you back! I agree with you he would be perfect for this role I can't stop thinking about how amazing the movie itself could be let alone with Cillian playing Ralston! Sounds extremely challenging and I know he could pull it off brilliantly! I hope we get some more news on the film soon! I agree that Ralston should have done a lot of things different but I still consider it heartbreaking when something this horrible happens to someone even if it was caused in part by their own foolishness. And as foolish and sickening as it may be I still think it would make a great film but that's just my opinion.

Having to cut off your own arm is pretty devastating, but hey, that's just me. *shrugs*

::)HEAVY DISGUSTED SIGH. Whatever. I think when a human being loses a limb, and is forced to perform the amputation himself... yeah, that qualifies as heartbreaking. I'm sure the physical pain and horror of enduring such an event was punishment enough to Ralston for his mistakes. Apparently there are those among us who never make misjudgements though. Good for them.

Being a lily-livered sort of person, there is no way I could watch a film where someone hacks his own arm off with a penknife. Don't care if it's Cillian stark naked, I won't be there. Am I the only one who gagged and retched all the way through the 'worst toilet in Scotland' scene in Trainspotting? Mr Boyle has a lot to answer for...

Am I the only one who gagged and retched all the way through the 'worst toilet in Scotland' scene in Trainspotting? Mr Boyle has a lot to answer for... Ugh! I remember. Agreeing that it was pretty cringe-making!

Yeah seriously, I think having a missing arm as a constant reminder of one stupid decision you've made for the rest of your life is punishment enough.
I never saw Trainspotting, was considering putting it on my Netflix a couple days ago, should I change my mind? lol

Agreed. And besides I'm sure it's a pretty rare person who's ever deliberately chosen to get their arm stuck under a boulder. It was a tragic accident which could have happened to anyone - or at least that's the impression I get from what I've learnt about the story so far. And seeing as tragedy tends to automatically lead to heartbreak - I personally don't get how anyone could deny the heartbreaking effect a movie such as this is likely to have on an audience. It sure beats me! I highly recommend checking out Trainspotting Larva. It may or may not be your kind of thing. But I know that though initially I didn't expect it would be mine, in the end I was really glad I decided to watch it as found it to be a very good film.

Oh, I would definitely recommend Trainspotting, too. I think it is a great film, apart from a couple of gross moments. It is also very, very funny. The accents are a bit thick, especially the character "Spud", it took me a while to get an ear for it. I'm not really a fan of Ewan McGregor, but think he is excellent in this. And Robert Carlyle is both terrifying and hilarious. Do have a look at it, Larvalee, and tell us what you think.

^^^Watch it watch it watch it! I love Trainspotting- but you shuld read the book first if you haven't. And how can anyone not like Ewan?! He's so damn cute and seems like such a down to earth, nice guy too. Love Long Way Round and Long Way Down. I really love the sound of this new movie so i hope it gets made and i hope Cillian is in it and that it's good!

LOL, I don't actually dislike Ewan, it's just that I wouldn't sit through a bad movie just to see him (unlike Cillian and WTD).
I know, I know - I am in the minority when it comes to WTD.
I like the Long Way Round too, especially Charley Boorman.
Ewan is also excellent in Shallow Grave, another Danny Boyle film, which also features someone hacking off limbs. Which rather neatly brings this back on topic!

Nicely done Sabine! lol I wonder how long it would take before the cast will be in place? They said late 2010 release so I would think it would have to be pretty soon if they haven't even started making it yet....

I'm wondering the same thing ;-) I would imagine that the casting aspect is already in progress by now, but of course as per usual they're having to keep all information hush hush just for the time being. I do hope it won't be too long before we find out whether or not Cillians playing the lead part though!
