What if Capa had a girlfriend at home?
☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀
She was shivering. She hadn’t been completely warm in ages and him holding her tight didn’t even help her quivering.
“You’re gonna get a cold” he moved her long dark hair out of her face and she shook her head.
“Don’t lecture me now, not tonight” she sighed
“You’re still not taking hot showers are you?” he wondered. She heaved yet another sigh.
“You’re leaving earth tomorrow and you’re going on about my shower habits” she looked deeply into his blue eyes.
“And you haven’t turned the heaters on either!” He ignored her words completely
“What if you don’t come back to me?” she in turn ignored his words
“The sun is dying and you’re still caring about fossil fuels” he shook his head, making the locks of his luscious shoulder length hair move about. “You’re amazing” he commented. She bit into her lip.
“Robert you know I can’t live without you” she told him and stifled a sob.
“You don’t have to” he finally answered her words “It’s just a short trip and I’ll be right back with you, and I need you well when that happens” his hand fondled her chin.
“But what if? There are so many things that could go wrong…” she bit harder into her trembling lower lip
“I told you not to watch the news” he looked sternly into her eyes; holding her face steady by holding onto her chin “They put all sorts of ideas into your pretty little head” he said and she closed her eyes.
“Can’t they take another scientist?” she asked, her eyes still closed.
“We’ve been over this a thousand times. I was the best qualified” he let go of her chin and her head immediately lowered.
“I wish I didn’t love you” her eyes were staring at the floor
“Don’t say that!” the hurt in his voice was evident
“Don’t you understand that I need you with me to be able to feel, to breathe?” she asked him, feeling his hands searching for hers. “I’d die if you didn’t come back” her voice was merely a whisper.
“That’s why I’m coming back safely” he faked a smile and grazed his thumb over the back of her hand.
“Icarus 1 didn’t” she sobbed
“That’s because they didn’t have me on board” he said with a fake laugh; he would do anything to see her smile. one last time.
“I’m being selfish” she said after a long painful pause.
“No you’re not” he let her know
“Yes, if you don’t go the whole world will freeze to death and here I am crying over my own insignificant heart” she said with shame in her voice.
“Don’t be silly” he told her and pulled her close to him in a clinging embrace “Your heart is the most important one” he spoke into her ear. His words made her gasp and press herself even tighter against him.
“Don’t let go” she whispered although her actions had already said it.
“I won’t” he told her sincerely.
“So…” she said after a long while of just holding onto one another.
“So…?” he looked into her eyes, holding her at an arm’s length taking in her beautiful face.
“Do you want to unwrap your going away present?” she asked, her words seemed a little strained and he had to laugh. He knew exactly what she meant by that.
“Of course I want to make love to you” he told her, with another laugh.
“Love, is that what the kids call it today?” she reached for his face looking into his eyes.
Gone was any trace of her melt down, just like that.
“Well we could say it’s a little exchanging of body fluids” he said dryly and she giggled
“Why did I fall for a scientist” her eyes rolled
“Why did I fall for a gorgeous young woman?” he rolled his eyes mockingly at her…
Later the two of them were sitting naked on her bed. Looking each other in the eyes; listening to each other’s breathing.
Her hand suddenly lay on his chest and she felt his heart thumb underneath his skin that was still moist with sweat. His hand lay on top of her hand.
“No matter if you return or not I will never forget the rhythm of your heart” she whispered “Robert you have to return” she withdrew her hand and he looked intensely at her “Because there is something I want to tell you when you return, something very important” she let him know.
“Fine, that’s a promise” and he sealed it with a kiss…
A kiss that was repeated and prolonged hours later when she bid him a safe journey. It seemed like nothing could break apart the kiss but eventually he did have to leave and as soon as he was out of sight a teardrop left her eye and she left the scene before take-off. She couldn’t stand watching it…
…
She hadn’t thought she’d react badly to his message that came days later. The poor woman was crying herself to sleep that night missing him terribly hugging the biggest pillow she could find hoping it would give her some form of comfort but it did just the opposite…
…
The day that ‘particularly beautiful morning’ dawned she gasped at the sight and instantly her gaze sought upwards
“Robert” she whispered “Please come home”.
Robert Capa never did return. No one could tell her what happened, no one knew and nothing could comfort her…
At his memorial she had walked up to the framed picture of him smiling that sweet smile of his and she gazed into the eyes.
“Robert” she whispered so no one would hear her “The important thing I wanted to tell you…” her hand landed on her belly and once again her eyes welled up with tears “I’m pregnant”.
