Cillian might as well not bother to do interviews, Alisa. He probably WOULD be better off because he doesn't want to answer any questions anyway. Why bother showing up if you're not in the mood? He often criticises the industry, comes off as jaded and downright offputting. In nine out of ten interviews he mentions the following, in no particular order:
1. That he's Irish. 2. That he was in a band 3. That he lives in London 4. That he's Irish 5. That he doesn't like interviews. 6. That he's Irish 7. That he's Irish 8. That he plays the ukelele 9. That he doesn't like to talk about his personal life. 10. That he's Irish 11. That he's Irish 12. That he doesn't want to comment on his co-stars 13. That he was in a band once.
You get the picture. Promotion is part of his job, We all have parts of our job we don't like doing but we do it anyway. Not sure why he can't seem to do that.
Re: Red Lights. I've had in-depth discussions about it with other forum members via email/PM. That was the only way to do it. It worked quite well back then. To be honest, I knew it was a no-hoper from when I read the script. It was God-awful, melodramatic and, to be frank, inconsistent. Some scenes made no sense in conjunction with others. It wasn't just a bad script, it was a script so riddled with plot holes that I'm surprised it was even made at all. That Cillian commented upon how 'brilliant' and 'amazing' that very same script was baffled me. It was a dreadful script. That was obvious to the few of us that read it. That dreadful script created, if possible, an even more dreadful film. I cannot think of a single redeeming feature about it.
I suppose one little anecdote I can share is that I was recently in my local Blockbuster store looking for DVDs to buy. There must have been nine or ten copies of this film on sale as unwanted returns. They were going for 99p. Scathing!
Sorry if this post is a little TOO honest. I just, again, want to put across a pospective and a potential reason why people have eased away. Because there is nothing to say. Nothing to talk about. Though I did attend a talk with Ron Howard today. That's one good thing. A brilliant man. A brilliant thinker. If nothing else, Heart of the Sea is something to look forward to. Who knows? It might also give us a few more original soundbites that stray AWAY from the ones listed above. We can only hope.

I don't think there's a post that's TOO HONEST. That's exactly what I'm trying to call for in this forum. It's sad that you had to have that conversation about Red Lights via PM. That's the thing I'm trying to bring up with this thread. Open talk. Thank you for bringing up things I didn't mention.

I had it via PM because at the time of writing it there was a lot of people who were itching to see it and had high hopes fo it. Me and a friend coming onto the forum and trashing it wasn't going to go down well, really I had literally nothing good to say about the film. I still don't. Since that is the last film a vast majority have seen him in it goes a long way in explaining why nobody is talking.

I see your point, but when I joined I tried to talk about the film that I liked the most. Breakfast on Pluto. It still means to me the most. Why do we always have to be talking about the latest thing? I mean... If I was in a Chaplin forum, I could never talk about the latest thing, but his fans are just as enthusiastic as I am, I suppose. I do understand the hunger for new things very well, though.

Since that is the last film a vast majority have seen him in it goes a long way in explaining why nobody is talking. Think that's very true. I was one who found Red Lights to be a shockingly bad mess, to the point that it became unintentional comedy for me. What was the worst thing about it to me was that not only was the film itself poor, but it was the first thing I had seen in which Cillian gave a poor performance. He was wooden, seemed to lack concentration throughout, and had zero chemistry with his co-stars. I was very unimpressed with the overall effort, and it did change my previous view of him as an actor who could always be counted on for a great performance. Anyway, as Hyacinth said, this movie was a pretty significant factor in my own personal loss of interest in Cillian. Fans are allowed to be fickle; we're not married to these people. I never even bothered with Broken because my interest level has pretty much bottomed out. The days of me watching something merely because Cillian is in it are gone. Going forward, if he happens to be in something that I'm interested in because it looks good, then that's cool. But I'm no longer extending extra effort to see everything he does just because of his presence.

Why do we always have to be talking about the latest thing? Missed this earlier; sorry, Alisa. We posted at the same moment. People can always talk about the old or the new as it suits them; but most fans prefer to discuss upcoming or current movies. Only because many people have already discussed the older ones for so long. It becomes a case of 'been there, done that.' I can't speak for anyone but myself in that regard, of course, but I have 2000+ posts on this forum that encompass Cillian's previous movies. I've said all I have ever wanted to say about them by now. Having said that, there are always new fans who are only now discovering an older film as they work their way through exploring Cillian's CV. So don't give up hope on discussion of the older movies. The best way to get people talking about something is to talk about it yourself and see if anyone bites.

You are very welcome to start BoP discussions if you wish. If people want to join in they will. A lot of his newer fans might not have even bothered with that film, though, to be honest. It's an independent film. Newer fans are more likely to be familiar with Inception or, sadly, his recent flops. Which, again, might be why nobody is feeling the need to talk about him. He's not an actor in a prime position, discussion-wise. But, I digress. I'm sure you will find some people willing to discuss old films with you. A lot of people loved that movie, myself included. Good luck You can't really compare to Chaplin, in fairness (if not because Cillian's not even in the same stratosphere as the man). The man's dead. There CANNOT be any new stuff, ergo the only option is to re-tread old ground.Cillian is a young actor who should really be in the peak of his career and should, indeed, have any number of avenues to amble down, discussion-wise.New things. Fresh things. That's what people want to talk about. New things. Fresh things.

Just to add (and, in light of this post, I have amended my previous) - I used to go by another name. 28Days. I responded and tried to engage on the Breakfast on Pluto thread. Quite vigorously, I might add. I just went back and had a look, Alisa. I posted a whole lot of in-depth posts that you chose not to respond to. There was your opportunity. Instead, you said nothing other than maybe a one off two line post. I kind of take issue with your apparent complaints now because I, amongst others, DID try to get a debate going about this older film. You, on the other hand, went absolute silent and didn't bother to get involved yet you're the one complaining about people not posting or having a discussion? How can you say that? Sorry to point that out but you can't criticise forumers (myself included) for not wanting to talk about old stuff when YOU are the one that didn't get involved. I don't mean to be harsh by saying that but - go and read the last 2 pages of the thread. You'll see what I mean. How can you sit there and say that nobody was interested? I know for a fact that I was. People engage when they are engaged. If posters don't actually post or get involved then they can't really expect anyone else to. You've posted thirteen times in nine months and a fair few of them have been to complain about nobody posting. I think you have averaged maybe a post a month since you joined. It's hardly productive for conversation, in all fairness

The main reason I don't post on this forum is, would you believe, the colour of the font. The light grey colour makes it very hard to read especially in daylight. I'm really looking forward to Peaky Blinders. It looks very cool and dark and the soundtrack sounds amazing. I suppose the reason this forum is quiet is because Cillian is a quite man. He is not new on the scene anymore and was never ostentatious or the kind of guy who seeks out celebrity for the sake of it. His beauty attracted a lot of attention when he was younger but he never seemed comfortable with that. I think I read he wants to continuously improve his acting skills and I think doing plays, TV characters and his usual indie films is a good way to do that. And yes he doesn't seem comfortable with interviews and that is something I can relate to myself. It's not easy for a shy person to talk about themselves and believe it or not actors can be some of the shyest people around. He also has a young family to raise and that's probably the most important thing to him right now. Cillian is just being Cillian and that's fine by me. I will always check out his work because I think he is a very talented actor and of course nice to look at.

Forums don't seem to be popular any more. It's too bad because they were the best way to make friends and share an interest. It's not just this forum that is seeing less traffic! I am a member of a few other fan forums that have existed for many years, and they all are much less busy than they used to be.

Well I don't think it's necessarily Cillian's or our fault that the forum is quiet/dead. I think social media has definitely changed the way people want to discuss/share things. The little forums I frequent are slow, but the big major ones that cover a variety of subjects (like the fashion spot, or superhero hype which i both post/read) still get a lot of traffic. I think more people just want to discuss things in one place instead of traveling to different corners all the time, and now they can do that thanks to twitter and tumblr etc. I run a fansite myself and I have noticed that my hit-count is now half of what it used to be and it makes me sad because I put in so much effort and money into it being the best, and I feel it is not paying off as much. It's a good place to collect all the news, photos, and videos etc. and get everything at once, but I think people just want to tweet and blog about their opinions when they have them.

What is your fan site? I can give it some traffic if its anyone I'm interested in.

I really think it is not nice to blame anything on Cillian. That's just nonsense. He gives enough, he's passionate about his work and he's really shy to boot. He's very mild and gentle as a bloke (I make him sound like a soap!) Well there are tonnes of reasons but Cillian is not any of them, he doesn't run the forum or flirt with the whole internet social thing anyway. Good for him. But I met some really amazing friends on here who I have had the pleasure to meet and some not so. Things change and this forum has for sure. However it's good to still welcome new members who do hold an interest through this medium and cheer them along

But I met some really amazing friends on here who I have had the pleasure to meet and some not so. Things change and this forum has for sure. However it's good to still welcome new members who do hold an interest through this medium and cheer them along Jesus, if that's 'passionate about his work' then I dread to think what indifference looks like. To say that he is completely blameless in what has turned into a lack of fan interest and discussion is naive. If there is nothing for fans to discuss then forums WILL grind to a halt. His last film projects have been dire, his current show is only airing in the UK (hardly gives his US audience anything to talk about, especially since he's only been promoting over here too) and he's giving the same tired interview he's been giving for years even now. He was in a band.
He doesn't like fame.
He likes to be able to walk to the pub for a pint.
He's Irish. We've heard it all before. Repeat ad nauseum. Until he starts actually doing good work and promoting said work with a degree of enthusiasm then I dare say more fans are going to drop off. God help the state of the forum then. It'll be even more of a ghost town than it is now. What can Cillian do to assist his own fandom? Be less 'exclusive'. Be less standoffish in interviews. Raise a bloody smile every once in awhile. Get off his high horse about journalists and how he 'hates all that'. Do something other than bored when he does give the time of day to a recorded interview. And for Christ's sake stop talking about the band, the dislike of fame. We've been hearing the same tired old tales for years now. It not only gets boring but it just feels farcical now. Having said that - he has loosened up a TINY bit recently. Who knows? Maybe he read something which caused him to take a long, hard look at himself.
