Chapter 19.

"How does the jury find the defendant?"
Jonathan had been aching for this day. Genevieve sat quietly in her blue cardigan and skirt, picking at her fingernails. She had began to show this bad habit of hers after her testimony. It never bothered him a lot, and it was a quiet quirk he never wanted her to lose.
The foreman stood and read the sheet.
"We find the defendant, Eric Adams, not guilty on reason of mental defect."
Genevieve grabbed his hand and gently smiled up at him. Eric smiled back at him as he was taken away to be driven to Arkham. The jury left and Jonathan couldn't help but hug Genevieve as they got out in the parking lot.
"You'll take care of him, right?"
"Of course. When I'm done, he won't hurt anything ever again."
She smiled and looked at him hopefully.
"Have I told you look stunning today?"
"Three times, but it never gets old."
"Oh, I lost track."
Genevieve was nearly going to kiss him when Mr. Rodriguez came walking toward them.
"Excellent work, Doctor. I must say, we have done something terrific for Mr. Adams, correct?"
"Of course, he'll be fine with me. There is a chance that he could have a breakdown, though, and I can't guarantee anything."
Mr. Rodriguez nodded and look toward Genevieve.
"Hello", he said, drawing out his words in a friendly tone, "I'm Marcos Rodriguez."
She shook his hand and looked peeved as he attempted to kiss her hand gently, but she snatched it away before his lips touched her skin.
"I know who you are, Mr. Rodriguez."
She had crossed her arms and angrily sighed. Marcos took the hint and straightened his tie, turning his direction back to Jonathan. He extended his hand for a shake, and went on his way.
"He's a bit scummy."
"But he doesn't know what his client is in for, does he?"
Genevieve pursed her lips and nodded thoughtfully. He drove her home and stayed with her, as he had called in late from work because of the trial.
"What will happen next?"
"I'll figure out something...but you shouldn't be worried. I wouldn't break my promise to you."
She grinned again and kissed him before she went back to her apartment steps.

sorry for the wait, i've had SUCH writer's block! they'll be more coming in the upcoming weeks.

nice. so he's finally going to the asylum to his doom. *evil grin* You should have fun with the upcoming chapters. Jonthan can torture him in so many ways. Also, Jonthan is so sweet with all his compliments to Ginny. love him. Keep up the great work.

Chapter 20.

Genevieve woke from a rough night around 12 in the morning. Her sweatpants and tanktop were wrinkled around her, her cover only clinging onto part of her legs and feet. Was she worried about Jonathan? He promised to take a man's well being away from him...for her sake. He was sweet and complimentary and treated her beautifully. Eventually, he wanted to marry her and have her bear his children, if she wanted to, that is. And why did she have this humane feeling for Eric? She glanced at her still-casted arm and the splint on her finger. He took away my sense of safety in this city, she thought. She wished
Jonathan was here right now, so he could comfort her mind and hold her in his secure arms. The only place she felt safe anymore was with him. Her parents were too far off and wouldn't understand her troubles. Jonathan was probably sleeping well, and she brought her warming cover back around herself when her phone rang.

"Hi there."
Jonathan took her coat and bag and hung it on a nearby chair. She found his pajamas very plain, flannel bottoms and an undershirt. Genevieve quietly surveyed his condo, looking around at his expensive furniture and marble counters.
"You couldn't sleep either, I'm guessing?"
"Yes. I'm actually worried about what, exactly, I'll do with Eric. My schedule isn't very busy, I'd just have to show a little earlier."
"So, I'm staying over?"
"Yes, if it's alright I'd really like you to stay in my bed."
She chuckled lightly, and then looked questioningly at him.
"No ulterior motives are in this. Sleeping, that's all."
Genevieve smiled and ruffled his hair. Jonathan was someone she really had began to trust. Jonathan probably wanted her to understand that he didn't bring her over for something he didn't feel like she would want to begin with yet.
"So, where's your room?"
He led her down a corridor and turned her right. His room was large, with a four-post bed and a dresser. His closet was walk in, and she continued to be a bit nosey, looking out of his windows to glimpse at Gotham, still somehow bustling.
"I'm going to turn off the lights..." he whispered as he left her alone.
She flipped the switch in his closet and viewed his clothes, neatly divided from suits, dress pants, dress shirts, ties, shoes...He didn't seem to have any casual wear. No jeans, no slouchy t-shirts. I'm not going to dig through his dresser, she mentioned in her head. His hand grasped hers, shocking his warmth through her.
"You don't seem to ever not dress up, Doctor."
"My casual clothes are over there", he directed her toward a few drawers near a mirror. Jonathan wrapped his arms around her and turned them both to the mirror.
"This would make for a cute picture", she grinned.
"How tall are you, by the way? I guessed five-six."
"More around five-four."
"Ready for bed?"
She nodded and he turned off the light to his closet. She slipped under his covers and turned her head to him, smiling.
"Goodnight." He smiled and responded with the same salutation. His arms went around her again, and she already began to feel sleep sweep over her.

yes, i wrote a new chapter! sorry it took me so long to get this up, i've just been sort of...uninspired! hope you liked this chapter.

Chapter 21.

Jonathan woke up at six in the morning, reluctant to leave Genevieve. Her arms were intertwined with his own, and she was slightly smiling in her sleep. He managed to seperate them and moved Genevieve gently so she was laying on her back. She shifted a bit with a gentle moan, and he kissed her lips before he went to take a shower. He finished in the bathroom and came back to find Genevieve awake, still yawning and stretching.
"Morning, sweetie", she muttered as she hugged him, "nice robe."
"Good morning to you, too. I hope you had a nice night."
"Very much so. Thank you for inviting me over."
"I think we needed each other for that night."
She nodded in agreement as Jonathan kissed her before he closed his closet door to get dressed for work.

Jonathan was still distressed about leaving Genevieve. They had such a lovely night, and the thought of it being everyday like that made him grin.
She was everything he had ever wanted, and he thought he sounded delusional, like a high school kid. He couldn't help it, though, and continued to think about her before he went about his work.
"Hello, Eric."
Eric was the first patient of the day. They had a brief chat about the rules of the asylum.
"I think these would be best for you, Eric."
Dr. Crane wrote down that he was perscribing the patient with a depressant, to relax his violent behavior.
"But you said I was fine..."
"Eric, if I don't have you perscribed on something, how will that look?"
Eric nodded and took his pills, managing to swallow them without water. Dr. Crane smiled and nodded, and left Eric in his cell.
Those depressants are too strong for him and have terrible side effects. That's probably why they took them off the market.

Chapter 22.

Genevieve was still at home when Jonathan returned, dressed in a cream t-shirt and a pair of blue jeans. She was watching TV, laying across his couch barefoot.
"I see you made yourself at home."
She snickered with a grin and sat up.
"Hey you. How was work?"
"Busy", he said, taking off his jacket and loosening his collar, "I just wanted to come home and find you here."
Genevieve smiled shyly and played with a loose curl of her hair.
"Aww, that's so sweet."
"What did you today?"
"I've been asleep for a while, then I woke up and raided your refridgerator. I hope you don't mind."
"No, not at all!"
He grasped her hand and kissed her cheek gently.
"You're always welcome whenever you want to come here."
Jonathan surprisingly kissed her, gently touching her face and neck. She whimpered in surprise, but slowly wrapped her arms around his neck. He gently broke away from her, and smiled.
"Can you stay longer?"
"Uhm...sure, darling."
Genevieve seemed taken aback by his request, but Jonathan was honest. He wanted her to feel safe. Her neighborhood was fine, but he lived somewhere where there would be security and no one could just show up. They both smiled at one another, and Genevieve kissed him again.

The next day at work, Eric's eyes were bloodshot and watery. After shooing away nurses, he sat down to talk to him.
"How are you feeling, Eric?"
Eric sighed groggily. His progress to being delusional was amazing to Dr. Crane.
"Alright, I guess. I could hardly sleep last night, and something woke me up really early today. I feel like my brain's going to seep out of my ears..."
"Don't worry, Eric. This should only be temporary. No long term damage will come from this."
Eric half-smiled hopefully. It's amazing he has so much hope in me, Jonathan thought.
"I have other patients to attend to, so I will talk to you again later."
"Bye, Doc", he sniffled.
Progress is slow...But progress is good, Dr. Crane grinned.

Chapter 23.

"How long have we know each other?"
Genevieve sat with Jonathan on his couch, drowsily watching a movie she rented. The afternoon lull of the sun was gentle across Genevieve's beautiful skin, illuminating her dark eyes. Jonathan had dressed rather casual for his off day, wearing jeans and a polo shirt.
"Two...three months...I know we met in April...what is it now?"
"July, sweetie."
"Oh, oh, right", he grinned, nodding, "But I know I'm very glad I ever met you."
"You say that all the time. I feel the same way, though. You've brightened up my life so much since James passed. Who knows what would have happened to me otherwise."
There was a slight silence in which she put her head on his shoulder, and during it, Jonathan began to feel nervous. Will she say yes? There's no guarantee she will.
He erased his thoughts and tried to focus. The velvet of the ring box itched across his skin now. If he missed this opportunity, who knows what would happen tomorrow.
"Genevieve?" He turned to her and already saw her turned toward him. She gently smiled, but had a inquisitive look on her face.
"Yes?"
"I...uhm..."
Come on.
"I bought you this...uhm...and...I..."
She began to nod after each of his words, smiling and trying to ease him. He took out the ring box and put it in her hands gently, caressing her palm before putting his hands back in his lap. She opened the box with a huge smile, nervous but expectant of the best. Her eyes lit up at the expensive ring, dotted with tiny sapphires with a diamond in the center. Her eyes darted back and forth from his face to the ring, her eyes growing watery as she shivered a bit in shock.
"I want to marry you."
Genevieve started to sob and sniffle, letting Jonathan put the ring on her hand.
"Jonathan...it's beautiful...oh my..."
She wiped her eyes and kissed Jonathan, nearly pouncing on him, embracing him. She muttered "Yes" over and over again, kissing him sporatically with a smile. She breathed deeply and looked into his eyes, still sniffling and combing her hand through his hair.
"Of course I'll marry you..."

Monday was another day to see his little pet, Eric. Over the months, his body and mind deteriorated greatly. His frame was gaunt and bony, and he was only somewhat responcive. Only once did he use his fear toxin, the formula strong enough to cement his fate. Walking into Eric's cell, it was still as clean as it was when he was moved in. There was very little he could do now.
"Mr. Adams. Good to see you, you're looking well."
Eric unconciously smiled, somewhat rocking and whispering to himself.
"Scarecrow..."
"Your pills should be up shortly, I just wanted to see how my favorite patient was doing."
Eric nodded quickly, his glazed eyes directed toward the ground. He covered his mouth and sneezed madly, and Dr. Crane slipped out quietly, past the nurse with Eric's still illegal medicine.
