oh yeah, i get it now. when he says 'scarecrow' he's welcoming it...i was wondering about that too. and i'm pretty sure, in the very last seconds of the Falcone-scaring scene, Crane is continuing in the vein of his patients hating the mask by saying 'they scream and they cry....' while he suddenly becomes an imposing figure, towering over Falcone and such. i know he says something like that, because it's the part i think of every time i try to describe Scarecrow to someone, my fave part. i also like the part where he first meets Batman, in that seedy room somewhere in the Narrows, i believe. y'know, where he hits him with his powder, tells him 'you look like a guy who takes himself too seriously', etc. such a cool guy.

What I find so fascinating about Dr. Crane/Scarecrow is hardly anything phases him, not when Falcone is trying to intimidate him or when Batman is in the warehouse. Everyone is terrified and he remains cool as a cucumber. Even after Batman hits him with the fear toxin he only gives Batman one piece of information, then does that "Dr. Crane isn't here right now ..." It seems very true that Dr. Crane has mastered his fear a great deal in his study of fear.

Also within that scene, which I really appreciated was Crane saying "You may not be afraid of me, but my employers will not be pleased when they come here ..." (or something along those lines). And in that instant you see Falcone intimidated. Crane is a master at turning the tables on the intimidator. What I love is that supposedly the most powerful bad guy in Gotham (Falcone) is taken down by someone he least suspected as a real threat (Crane). It's ironic and a delicious reversal.

One of the quotes that really struck me in the third viewing was when he was talking to Rachel in Arkham. "On the outside he was powerful, in here only the mind can grant you power." Only the mind can grant you power. I think that's the truest credo of Dr. Crane in a nutshell. He uses his brain to outwit and subjugate the powerful and the strong. He manipulates them to the point at being at Dr. Crane's mercy (needing his favors at declaring them insane) and then he reduces these bullies to blubbering cowards "They scream and they cry."

i, unfortunately, have only as yet seen it once. what always fascinated me about the Scarecrow character was exactly what you are all saying, his mastery of fear. fear is a force of nature, it takes considerable skill not only to inspire it in one's enemies but to overcome it in one's self. the character has always been a strong, twisted one, which is just my bag, really. in the new animated series, he was brilliantly represented by Jeffrey Combs, and here he is portrayed just as well by Cillian. i was hoping to be impressed and i have not been let down

I love when he's talking to Falcone about Rachael. There's this incredible calm, evil air about him in that scene that's really hard to describe. The way he tells Falcone, "I know you're not intimidated by someone like me..." Just dripping with hate. To Crane, Falcone is of the same species as the bullies that tormented him all his life. The only reason he doesn't destroy him right away is because he knows that they need him for now. (Notice I say "Destroy" and not "Kill." Crane doesn't want to kill Falcone, he wants to humiliate him by reducing him to a diaper-wearing sobbing mess.) Once Falcone tries to blackmail him and he knows that his employers will simply say kill him (he knows Falcone is no longer useful), Crane does what he does best. And enjoys it, too, from the sound of it. It sounds like he's been eagerly awaiting the day Falcone would no longer be useful to them.

It's interesting that someone voted for that 'Crane discussing with Falcone'... I personally think he looks the MOST eerie in that scene. The actual lines would be 'I'm more than aware that you're not intimidated by me, Mr Falcone, but you know who I'm working for.' (hee hee sorry, I'm too obsessed). Did you notice that after he took off his glasses, there was a marked change from his usual professional demeanour( which always happens when he removes his glasses). I don't know if it was the lighting or his makeup, but I felt that his face looked really unnatural and eerie...there was this unnatural smile on him all the way...

Wow, you are so right. He was very creepy there ... and you notice he was very effective at intimidating the master of intimidation Falcone. I think the creepiest thing about him were the eyes.

True true, he was creepy, but I really liked that scene as well. You see a young, skinny boy successfully intimidating and old crime boss. I found Crane to be quite impressive in that scene!

(i forget this line) but it describes exactly how he feels and it's brilliant revenge for him..... anyway i am agreeing with you so this is more of an ottid post..... Crane establishes himself as amazingly intemidating..... even if it is not with brute force, he intimidates with his mind which is the most powerful weapon of all
