Hello, I am rather new. I know it may seem a tad presumptuous to post a topic on my first day of registering, but I just HAD to. I couldn't find a topic about everyone's favorite literary characters!

So, it would be great to know everyone's favorites and maybe, if you guys are up to it, a little snippet about why they're your favorite?

I'll start. Here are mine-

Faramir - The Lord of the Rings. I can identify with his always being in his brother's shadow and not being his parent's favorite child. I can identify with his wanting to be accepted by the people he loves. I admire his wisdom and strength of mind.

Atticus Finch- To Kill a Mockingbird. I admire his wisdom and the way he puts things so that his children can understand him. I also like the fact that he has his children call him by his first name rather than. I admire his standing up for what is right rather than what is easy.

Holden Caulfield- Catcher in the Rye. I can identify with his people/world-weariness. I can identify with his animosity towards "phonies." I identify with his longing for things to remain unchanged.

Erik- The Phantom of the Opera. I dentify with his being unloved and unwanted by the world. I identify with his passion for music.

Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy- Pride and Prejudice. I'm envious of their relationship. I envy Lizzy for her quick-wit and social ease. I identify with her care-free attitude. I identify with her views on human characters. I admire her out-spoken nature. I love Mr. Darcy and his comtemptuous indifference

Jane Eyre and Mr Rochester- Jane Eyre. I'm envious of their relationship, darnit! I admire Jane's patience and her will to stay true to herself and her beliefs. I love Mr. Rochester's passion. I love the fact that, while being two unattractive people, they found beauty in one another.

Heathcliff- Wuthering Heights. My favorite villain! I love his passion and obsession. I would be afraid to cross paths with him, but I think that his character is so interesting to analyze. From afar, of course

Ok, I'm rather tired... I'm done for now. So please, do post away!

P.S. I REALLY hope there isn't another topic like this. I did a search and read the topic headings of the majority of the threads in this section. If there already is athread like this, you may do what you will with me. I am at your mercy.

I love all things Classical.
I adore Cillian Murphy.

Robert Langdon
Da Vinci Code & Angels & Demons
...because he is so wonderfully written! Dan Brown is a genius, and he brings this awesome character to life. His intelligence is what really draws me in.

Lestat
The Vampire Chronicles - Anne Rice
... again, this charcter is so wonderfully written! It is just something about the way he 'IS' ... no matter what kind of 'badness' he gets in to, you just can't seem to help but like the guy! -- I guess he is like the Colin Farrell of the Vampire world!

August King
The Journey of August King - John Ehle
... August is so gentle and honest. He is a simple man, who inspite if his misgivings does the right thing.

Francesca Johnson
The Bridges of Madison County - Robert James Waller
... because I can relate to the character on some level.

^^ He's cool, in the Da Vinci Code. In Angels and Demons, Vittoria stole the show. There's a role model

Lindsay Boxer
From James Patterson's books 1st to Die, 2nd Chance, 3rd Degree, 4th Of July. She's pretty cool... yeah.... I don't know where I'm going with this.

Uncle Tom -- Uncle Tom's Cabin
I just felt so bad for him... the book was a bit boring in the beginning (and middle.... and parts of the end... I have no appreciation for anything), but he made me sympathize for him.

i'll post more as they come to me but...................pretty much everyone in Catch 22, and the unknown author/hero of Evasion. also, Howard W. Campbell, Newton Hoenniker and Malachi Constant are three of my favorite Vonnegut characters.

and Sebastian Dangerfield, of the Ginger Man, is such a cad! though i loved the book, i haven't decided how i feel about him yet. i think i liked O'Keefe better.

My favorite book characters are Legolas (LotR), Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy (Pride and Prejudice), aaaaaand....there are so many from the HP series. lol I absolutely loved reading about the elves in LotR. They're amazing creatures and since Leggy was the main elf, I love him. Music, I agree with you on what you said about Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. I loved them.

Those are superb, i think those are great characters.

Lisa, whatever female driven emotion based dilemma you're dealing with right now, you have my sympathy but for the sake of time and sanity, let's break this down into a little male driven fact based logic, one simple call saves your dad's life and it has to be made soon.
