The one that defined the whole British period-comedy-drama genre: "A Room with a View"
Then:
"Contraband"
"A Matter of Life and Death"
"I Know Where I'm Going!"
(The last three are pre-1950; they were directed by Michael Powell.)

I know! They seem to be a little more clever than American films. Especially the romanctic comedies...I usually hate romantic comedies but the British ones seem to have a little more..something.
Plus, they're leading men are hotter. They're not the super chiseled, perfect face, teeth and hair kind of actors (think Brad Pitt, etc.). They're a little different looking.

lulu,
I also love French films. Swimming Pool and Amelie were excellent. Do you recommend any others? None of my friends are really into foreign films so its hard for me to get good recommendations. Thanks for your help!

my favorite french film is "the beat that my heart skipped" as i'm just far to lazy to figure out the french name and write it with all the accents and what not. also City of Lost Children done by the same director who did Amelie is really good, weird, but good.
i was watching Dear Frankie the other day, what an incredibly scottish movie.i really liked it.

Well I'd say
Every single movie by Ken Loach except the 2 last ones,'Looking for Eric' and 'Its a Free World'.Ive never finished 'Its a Free World' by the way..and I refused to go to cinema for it.I'm almost annoyed.Maybe I'll try to watch it entirely later.. Then.. 'Liam' by Stephen Frears-wonderful!!I love it! -Billy Eliott -Bend It like Beckham ..
