"Wake up Jim, you're having a nightmare," Celine gently patted Jim on his shoulders in a somewhat reassuring way. Jim bolted from his sleep, gasping for breath. He seemed to be shaken.
For days, Celine and Jim had been trying partly to survive and partly to look for a way out in the nightmare both of them had never thought possible. The world, or England at the least, stood still and was held prey to the infected. Jim called them "zombies", and they really were, only that they kill with unimaginable rage. Those hate-filled crimson eyes. Celine had killed many of the infected, but they scared her still after all these days.
And Jim. She used to think that he will slow her down. He was weak and looked pathetic the first time she saw him being chased by the infected. Celine told him that if he proved to be a burden, she would not hesitate to leave him behind.
But she couldn't. She wouldn't.
"Hush, it's all right, Jim. It's just a bad dream," Celine told Jim, consoling him. She could see that Jim was shivering from the remaining coldness of dawn. "Do you want to talk about it?"
"No...I...," Jim stammered.
Jim didn't want Celine to further worry about him. He felt indebted to Celine, after all, she saved his life. They should have gone to the countryside days ago, but Celine feared that Jim that he was still weak to travel. She said she needs a strong back to travel with, and not an excess baggage. Jim never took offense on Celine's words. She was indeed tough, but behind the hard exterior, he sees a very caring woman. Jim just hoped that someday he can repay her for what she has done.
"It's okay." Celine nodded as if she understood. "So what do you want for breakfast?"

The first rays of the sun peeked from the clouds, engulfing the horizon with the immense beauty of a sunny day. Celine and Jim were heading south, looking for some sign of the living.
"Do you think God is mocking us?" Celine asked Jim as they walked down the street. Jim eyed her with amusement and walked past her with a bit of a swagger.
"What do you mean?" Jim replied. He looked at Celine rather playfully.
Celine gazed at Jim with a weird expression on her face. She'd never seen Jim looked happy. Despite the situation they were in, she found herself smiling at Jim.
"Oh, nothing...I mean, I never seen such a lovely day. When everything used to be normal, I couldn't remember a day God made the sun shine this bright. But now, look at it. It seems like-"
"A paradox?" Jim butted in. He looked at Celine with his bright blue eyes that could melt even the coldest of hearts.
"Yes, you can put it that way," Celine remarked. Jim placed his arms over her shoulder as they walked along. He was silent for a while, lost in thought.
"Celine, have you ever heard of the word 'hope'?" Jim said suddenly and looked at her intently as Celine nodded. "Hope guides us through the day. It is what makes us believe that we can find a concrete answer somewhere. Things happen not because they're absurd, but they simply just. However, we had this thing called hope that makes us go look for it."
"Why, Jim, since when did you become a priest?" Celine laughed as she messed up his brown locks. Jim too chuckled.
"I just said that because I want to leave you something to remember me by. To think of it, I've never done anything that you couldn't do yourself, so the least I could do is to give you a word of wisdom." Jim uttered. He again gazed at Celine with tenderness, and for a moment she thought she saw sadness in those soft eyes.
"You sound as though you're leaving." Celine said as they walked by in the desolate streets.

It had been ten days since they've seen a living soul in London. They saw a guy on the top of a three-storey building, dangerously standing near the edge. Fearing that he might fall, Jim and Celine tried to talk to the guy, but he never seemed to realize they were there. All of a sudden, to their horror, he jumped. The two heard an ugly thud as his mangled body lay in the cold, blood-soaked pavement.
Things had looked bleak since then. Before darkness sets in, the two would look for an uninhabited building and lock themselves in one of the rooms. At night they would hear terrifying shrieks and howls in the streets, and sometimes inside the buildings. It was not uncommon to hear and see the infected fight each other like rabid monsters as they shred themselves into bloody pieces. An infected once banged and tried to force open the door of the room they were staying, only to be warded off by its own kind into some sort of a gory duel. Things had indeed turned into worse as they could no longer see people locked somewhere in their houses.
“Probably all of them became infected,” Celine told Jim with despair, as the apparently beautiful day ended with the same doomed result like the previous ones. Jim was inspecting the room, making sure that every door was secure. Like Celine, Jim cannot help but feel terrible as well.
“Look Celine, tomorrow we could go to the countryside, maybe we can be safe there.” Jim offered. Celine looked unconvinced.
“Are you sure, Jim? Can you handle the long travel?” Celine was still concerned at Jim’s condition. She couldn’t risk any damage that would happen to Jim if they should head for a long drive.
“Yes…I’m sure.” Jim replied. He was going to say something but he suddenly stopped. While he was checking the adjoining room when he saw a dark figure move a few feet from the bed.
The room was very dark and Jim wasn’t really sure if he really saw something or his mind was just playing tricks on him. His heart fluttered a bit as he held his baseball bat tightly. He motioned for Celine to keep quiet. Slowly, he inched his way towards the bed while Celine followed him from behind. As they approached they heard a loud shriek. The faint moonlight coming from the other room barely reached the room but Celine could make out the figure of a huge bloodied man sneering at Jim with those hungry and terrifying red eyes. He looked at both Jim and Celine, and like a trapped animal, he poised to attack. The infected lunged at Jim as he lost his balance and fell. Celine let out a cry and bashed the infected in the head. She hit it over and over, blood splattering everywhere. She continued doing so until she heard Jim spoke.
“Stop it, Celine. He’s dead.” Realizing that Jim was covered with the infected’s blood, she helped him up. “Oh my God, are you bitten?” Celine asked Jim with concern. Celine realized she should have let Jim keep out of harms way before bashing the infected. She examined Jim’s blood-soaked body but Jim casually waved her off. “Don’t worry, I wasn’t. Thanks for saving my life yet again.” Jim smiled at her but it was obvious that the encounter had upset him.
“Jim, are you sure you’re all right?” Celine glanced at Jim nervously as he quickly went to the bathroom. “Yes. I’m fine don’t you worry about me. I think we should really go tomorrow.” Jim told her as he washed himself. Jim really thought that he was fine until he was washing his hands. He found two scratches which were slightly bleeding. His heart skipped a beat. It was only then he felt as if his hands were burning. The realization thereafter hit him like a gunshot. He glanced at Celine from the corner of the room and for a moment he wanted to hold her close, to tell her how much she means to him.
Quietly he locked the door, slumping into the floor in frustration. His arm now felt like as if it was melting, the heat was unbearable. Through his mind, he thought that he had failed Celine, just like in his nightmares. Slowly his body began to spasm, his breath was labored. He must do something to help Celine survive.
With his remaining strength, Jim believed he could do just one last thing.
To be continued…
thanks for hearing me out.
