I don't think we were really suppose to like Matthew's character, Dylan. And I don't know if this is really the truth but from what I got from the movie is that Vera (Keira's character) was attracted to Dylan because he was a living embodiment of the best times of her life - back when they were kids and the war was still nonexistent. I think Dylan felt that way about Vera too. They placed each other into this pedestal and both eventually chose their spouse when their idealized image of each other was crushed (during William's trial). I think it's a bit the same in Kaitlin's case. She seemed like the girl who always saw herself as someone unworthy to anyone. But then she meets Dylan who treated her like a muse - a constant inspiration to his poems. She was caught up with the romance of it all that she failed to fully accept the ugly side of their marriage: That they were only using each other and nothing more. Both girls had this strongly in common: They were both in love with the image Dylan built for them about them.
William was the only person so in touch with reality and was the only person who loved wholeheartedly and realistically.

Thanks for your input. It makes sense that Caitlin and Vera were in love with an idealized version of Dylan and not who he really was as a person. I guess Matthew Rhys did a good job then if we were supposed to hate his character. I mean, all in all, all of the performances were pretty strong. I think the only problem with the movie was the screenplay. I think it could've been stronger and with more substance. Other than that though, I really enjoyed it. It was absolutely beautiful to watch, and I thought the four leads had great chemistry with each other.

I agree. The screenplay was the weak spot but the actors and the cinematography was absolutely bril.

I'm not sure. Try looking for it on video stores though because Cillian is amazing in this movie.
