Sorry to hear you didn't like it Mrs Uzumaki!
One of my family kindly recorded it for me! :-) And I did start to watch it! I have to admit though I sort of struggled with taking in the story at the time. Probably didn't help I was tired at the time. I definitely plan to re-watch it though. Generally this type of movie isn't really my thing but in this case I plan to make an exception. From what I did take in I thought the storyline was interesting and thought Cillian was very good in it. Agreeing it was a pretty depressing kind of movie though - and particularly the ending. Definitely the kind of film I'd have to be in the right kind of mood to watch.

I think pretty much the same as you both about that movie.... No doubt that it is a great movie and there have to be more intelligent movies like this with serious topics. But for me, the most cruel and agonizing thing to watch are torture scenes... Seriously, I had to turn off the sound so I couldn't hear the cries of pain... It's kind of a traumatic thing for me... torture scenes in a movie. Since I saw Syriana and Body of Lies I'm kind of done with watching torture in films... It's far too much for me...

Maybe it's because i'm Irish and the story is so close to home and interesting to me, but i adore the movie. I think it's so beautifully made and Cillian was stunning in it. His last scene- even though it's extremely sad and i do always end up crying- is just unbelievable. He makes it so real, i've never seen anyone act so convincingly when put in that situation. And i think when films make you cry or raise strong emotional responses from people, it means they're well made and so engrossing that people actually think it's real, which is a good thing. I think it's a sign of a very strong movie that's making a strong impact and won't be forgotten easily.

Oh don't get me wrong, I thought it looked like it was an extremely well made movie and as always thought Cillian gave a very convincing good performance - going by what I saw of it.. Not faulting the film standard at all. :-) It's just that with that type of movie I just have to be in the right kind of mood to want to watch it. I'm the same way with other war movies such as Schindlers List, Gone with The Wind and Grave of the Fireflies. Very good movies imo but just not the type of films I'd feel I could watch at any time. (spoiler alert) As so far I've not watched the film properly all the way through I didn't see the torture scene's (though am sure they must be pretty bad!). What really got me though was the scene in which Cillian's character's brother has to order him shot and then it's done - which I did see. While for me it was pretty far from being the most violent thing I've seen done in film, I still found it pretty horrifying/disturbing!

The anticipation of what you know is to come with those sorts of scenes can feel every bit as unpleasant in itself as actually seeing it. Can't say I blame you!

I came downstairs when I woke up to see that my mum was watching this film (in which I recorded that day it aired!) It. Was. Odd. Now that I think about it, my mum has seen a lot of Cilly movies cos of me (despite the fact she isn't physically attracted to him...I know, crazy right?)

But for me, the most cruel and agonizing thing to watch are torture scenes... Seriously, I had to turn off the sound so I couldn't hear the cries of pain... I started watching this movie a few months ago, but after the first torture scene, I stopped the film. I get kind of queasy watching those kinds of scenes. I did watch 28DL although I don't like zombie movies, but at least at the back of my mind, I knew it was an alternate universe. It's different for this movie because you realize that these events could have really happened since I guess it's loosely based on historical facts. I really want to finish watching this, though, because I find the Irish independence movement interesting. (Revolution against foreign occupants is also something that's played a large part in the history of my country, which has been colonized and invaded centuries ago, but that's a different story.) I once read a book by one of my favorite authors and I had to set it aside because of the graphic description of this really horrible and terrifying scene. I eventually picked it up again after several weeks and after I got over the nauseous feeling every time I touched the book. LOL. I finished the book. I think it'll only be a matter of time before I continue watching this movie, and after I much mental and psychological prepping up. *Inhale, exhale...*

The cruelties are settled in a real world.
