I won't make much of an ado about this... This will be a few parts long and here is part 1.
Obviously Neil is Neil from Watching the Detectives... the girl is based on someone I used to be
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Going into the video store she heaved a sigh; she could never decide if she absolutely loved places like that or hated them. At least the guys on the couch seemed… Okay? Was that the word?
She was looking at the covers of the movies being on the lookout for that one movie she had been searching for.
“Neil I think she needs some help that one” one of the guys called out from the couch and she looked away from the DVD’s to the counter where another man was heaving a sigh and nodded as he scratched the back of his head.
“What are you looking for?” he said tiredly as he approached her.
“Breakfast on Pluto, on VHS… My DVD player gave up a few years ago” she shrugged her shoulders. He looked at her with his clear blue eyes
“What genre is it? I don’t think I have it” he sad in disbelief
“Thought as much… ” she said and was ready to leave
“I can try and find it for you though” he called out as she had started walking away.
“Really?” she asked, the excitement clear on her face “That’d be fantastic if you could! It sounds insane to you I bet but my life isn’t complete without that movie” she admitted and a smile came on Neil’s face.
“So wanna tell me about the movie then?” he said walking towards the counter with the antique looking cash register that she found herself admiring.
“It was directed by Neil Jordan and released in 2005 and the main actor was a guy named Cillian Murphy” she said, she knew all that by heart. Neil jotted the information down.
“So what happens in it? Is it a sci-fi?” he wondered
“No, more like a tranny movie I suppose” she shrugged her shoulders
“Cool” he said and scribbled some more.
“Give me your number then and I’ll call when I’ve found it for you” he said and she bit her lip.
“I’m picky about my men so why don’t I just come back in a week or so?” she said. He raised an eyebrow
“I’m really not asking for your number for that, trust me” he said a little flustered
“Good so I don’t have to give you the whole ‘I only date men in dresses’ routine then” she smiled at him and he shook his head.
“So that’s how you brush guys off?” he commented
“I usually tell them I’m gay or that I only like gay men… don’t ask” she warned him “So I’ll come back in exactly a week and check then” she avoided the subject.
A week later she did return to the store. She walked in and went directly to the counter barely paying attention to her surroundings, the only thing on her mind honestly was to find that movie.
“I was looking for Breakfast on Pluto” she said.
“I found it but it’s on the way, it’ll be here next week” he said with a laugh in his voice “So what do you think?” he said and now she finally actually looked at him.
“Jesus!” she remarked. There he was in a blonde wig and the ugliest floral dress. “Not again” she shook her head
“You don’t like it?” he asked correcting the wig that was about to fall off of his head.
“I am not interested in you or anybody, I don’t want a man in my life” she got defensive and backed off.
“Hey wait” he said and pulled the wig off “I didn’t mean it like that” he let her know.
“I’ve just had it with men doing this… You’re all so desperate aren’t you” she rolled her eyes and left.
The next week she was apprehensive about returning to the video store… as much as she really needed that movie she was worried about that strange man.
“The movie please” she said coldly barely looking at him.
“Here you go” he put it on the counter and her eyes widened. She paid and was ready to leave when he grabbed her hand.
“Wait” he said and stared right into her eyes “What the hell is your problem?” he asked
“Let go of me or I’ll scream” she said as she began breathing heavily, her hand balling into a fist he eased his grip and his fingers slipped from her wrist
“Why do you hate me?” he asked
“I hate men, Okay, I hate men who won’t leave me alone… who dresses like a woman because I make one silly comment… I can’t deal with men” she said looking at his face.
“So a boyfriend broke your heart?” he asked and she heaved a sigh.
“I never had a boyfriend” she admitted and took a step back
“I doubt that” he told her
“It’s a long story Okay and now I have the movie so I’ll be out of your hair” she said and turned in her heels to leave.
“So you’re gay then I’m cool with that” he called out to her.
“I’m not gay” she turned to look in his eyes “Men just make me uncomfortable because I can’t trust them” she said and took a deep breath, her fingers clinging to the movie cassette.
“So, is that all men, or just me?” he was again scratching the back of his head looking at her face. She rolled her eyes
“Give it up Neil” she shrugged her shoulders.
“Tell you what, I’ll send the guys home and we can watch the movie on the couch, I’ll get us some Cokes… what do you say?” he casually suggested
“Oh that’s exactly what I want… sitting on a couch all alone with a complete stranger” the sarcasm in her voice was thick enough to be cut through with a knife.
“I just really want to watch that movie, and the front is glass plus people will be coming and going so you’re completely safe” he said pointing to the windows and the couch “Don’t go please” he said as he ran across the street to get the sodas.
While he was away she sat down on the couch and was reading the back of the cassette, her head spinning a that little voice in the back of her head bothering her.
“Back” he called out as he made the bell over the door ring as he entered with the two cups. He went to the couch and handed her one. She smiled gratefully and put the straw to her lips and took a good sip.
He took the movie from her hands and put it on sitting back down on the couch making sure to have a good distance to her; he was beginning to learn and she nodded at him.
“Thanks” she mouthed and they sat in silence for a while watching the movie.
“You know he reminds me of you” she suddenly broke the silence and he took his eyes off of the screen to look at her
“Me?” he pointed to himself and looked back at the screen
“You have some of the same features” she let him know.
“Really?” he said and the subject was dropped.
He was so into the movie that he never noticed she was crying before she was almost done drying her eyes. He shifted on the couch and looked carefully at her.
“Are you okay?” he asked and she nodded with a smile despite the tears
“Those scenes just get to me” she said and then something happened that took her aback.
He reached out his hand and gently wiped away a teardrop she hadn’t caught and she didn’t even move away; she allowed him to touch her and she looked into his eyes. Neither of the noticed the movie finishing…
“Hello?” an impatient costumer ruined the moment and now she jumped and moved to the complete other end of the couch and Neil crawled up to help the costumer. She was breathing heavily touching the skin on her cheek that she had allowed him to touch just before. That was when she decided to run and never come back…
