Hi all, how to get a picture (avatar) under your name on the left or at the bottom of your posts (signature) seems to be the most Frequently Asked Question around here, since we have such a photogenic subject!
First, you need a pic you want to put up, that's not too big on your computer screen and doesn't take five mins to load. Ones that end in .jpg or .gif work best (gifs can be animated - the avatars that move are gifs). Smaller pics are best. Often downloaded pics are OK because someone already made them 'net friendly' for you.
Photobucket is probably the most popular place for storing photos to link to. I just checked them out - hey, they have tutorials on how to get around their site, here you go -->

Ok, once you've got that sorted:
To put a pic into your post (or your sig, same steps) copy the Img field from your photobucket page and paste it into your post. If you're not using Photobucket, you post the address of the image inside image tags.
Eg. the picture is here - how to make it display? www.davidbowie.com/users/Vicious/jcrane-straitavatar109x150.jpg
Wrap it in some image tags by clicking on the wee pic in a white frame icon or type in

...and if I take out the spaces you get:
-------------------------------------
Hotlinking Don't do it please - that's when you right click & copy the link to a picture already up in someone else's photobucket account. You use up all their bandwidth and sometimes the pic stops working then. Please save it to your computer and reupload it in your own photobucket account.
Avatars - 100x100 pixels max, but you can set a custom size for less than that so your pic doesn't go all squished or blocky. In your profile, select Modify Profile at the top, then scroll down to see the Avatar settings.
Hope that's some help, happy posting ... ~Ultra
