Penny Dreadful
I binge watched the entire season (only 8 episodes!) in one sitting like nobody's business. It has its raunchier...well cable-y bits i.e. gratuitous sex and violence.
But the writing is great, in my opinion it's literary brilliance via television. And the acting is awesome. For the most part.
--There are some weird accents thrown around. Like Keanu Reeves in Dracula weird. It's a bit off-putting. I'm hoping that mellows out in season 2.
It's created and written by John Logan, who's written a ton of screenplays including "Gladiator," "The Aviator," "Sweeney Todd," "Rango," "Hugo," and "Skyfall." (I highly recommend his play "Peter and Alice" for reading. Dame Judi Dench and Ben Whishaw were the main cast on stage and it's so easy to imagine them in character.) He has a very...classic style in my opinion, a little dense but really rich in depth.
Likely that it's not everyone's taste. But it should appeal if you like dark fairytales, Shakespearean tragedies, Victorian literature...some elements of horror. It's all my favorite things in a basket. Probably good for fans of Hannibal.
It's not terribly shock/scary if you're worried about that but it is dark. They do a great job of translating the literature into something that would be interesting on screen. Also nice that it doesn't stick entirely to the base texts so you have surprises in the story.
Main cast is Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Josh Hartnett (heartthrob of my preteen years), Billie Piper, Harry Treadaway, Rory Kinnear, Danny Sapani and Reeve Carney.
I could really see Cillian diving into a role in the Penny Dreadful universe, but that's just my fantasy of seeing my favorite writers/actors work together.
Hopefully there are others on the board who are fans or want to give the show a chance.
Have to wait an entire year for season 2 though. Oh dear.
