How to make an icon?

How do you make an icon? Do you go to some website? I want to make some!

I went to avatarhell.com but none of my avatars ever work....it makes me so mad.......

Yeah, this is a tad vague, so apologies.

But usually to make an icon, people...

1. Save the picture they want to use to their computer
2. Open it up with a picture editing program (Windows computers come automatically with Paint, but you can also use programs like Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro... Which require purchasing]
3. Crop or resize the picture to 100 x 100 pixels or less
4. Upload the picture to a image hosting site (Ex. Photobucket)
5. Paste the link in the avatar section of your profile.


And that's pretty much it. Sounds complicated, but not really. If you're wondering about any of that.. just ask

Hello! How come i can't see my avatar? I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I tried doing blue's instructions but I still can't see my avatar. I tried uploading a pic on tinypic.com. Should I try another image hosting site? Please help! I want Cillian to appear underneath my username, too!

ok, you dont need to re-size you pic before loading it to photobucket, photobucket.com will do that as well (just re-size in editing once saved)
Just save the picture you want to your PC and load it to photobucket. you will need to make an account but dont worry its free and comes in very handy for editing.
what you'll see when you've uploaded it to photobucket is there are a number of various link codes you can use.
the code should start off a bit like this:

.http://i609.photobucket.com...etc..

some codes start img..etc and are for use in a different application (signatures, direct link etc)
the various codes will work in different applications, if the code you try doesnt work, pick another until it does.

same goes for signature pictures, its trial and error really but its very easy once you've used it a couple of times.

Yay! I did it, Crane! My avatar's really small, though. I used tinypic.com because you don't have to create an account to upload a photo. How do I make the avatar bigger?
