ok, so i know someone just made a girl with a pearl earing post. and i would have just posted this on there as a comment but i would have felt rude changing the topic (somewhat) of the original post. ok
so i also just saw girl with a pearl earing. cillian was great in it. alot of acitng with the eyes again. just those looks he would give her when they were walking. SO cute. but i did not get the movie at all. i get the plot and all but alsjdf. i had to watch it a couple times. so a few qeustions...
was scarlett johansan and colin firth like... fancying each other? and thats why the uptight wife of his was so horrible to her? i mena, they never did anything. and she gave herself to cillian anyways. and what the heck was up with that one guy who was like goign to rape her or something? didnt he have a wifee? and why was the daughter ( aname blank) such a horrible little wench. honestly! like she didnt like her from day one. and then when he farther yelled at her. well it wasnt entirly scarletts fault!
thhe movie overall confused me. it was very slow and very quite. i have more questions but im still having a brain fart.

most of the movie didn't make sense. the only reason i got it wsa because i ead the book. i'll answer your questions though:
1. yeah greit liked vemeer and he liked her but he never really did anything about it. other than the last part with his hand across her lip, and giving her the pearl earrings in his will when he died.
2. catherina was mean to her because she was a witch in general, lol. also she was jealous that greit got to go in the studio and she wasn't allowed.
3. van whatever his face was just a really sketchy old man. when they were talking about the painting of the maid in a red dress, they said he got the maid pregnant from keeping her drunk. he was just a really gross rich man.he had a wife but even at dinner it was clear he made fun of her and didn't like her.
4.cornelia was a really horrible child just because it was in her nature. also in the book greit smacks her in almost the very beginning when they meet. so she resents her and does really evil things to her. peieter the son had a stronger/solid role int he book, were as in the movie he was hardly on screen. they cut out a lot of vital parts and it kind of made the continuity all wrong. it's very hard to understand if you havent read the book.

I know the answer to one of your questions...
I'm PRETTY sure the wife was evil to Greit because she could tell her husband, Vermeer...fancied Greit, and payed more atention to Greit, then her... and that made her pissed..

I also read the book because when I saw the movie I thought it ended a bit abruptly, and plus I like reading a book whenever there's a film adaptation (which is also what I did with A Walk To Remember). Anyway, the book is more detailed and tells everything from Griet's point of view, and I think the relationship she and Vermeer had was a sort of attraction but I don't think it was a sexual thing. Plus the ending of the book was better (in my opinion) to the movie's ending. Long story short: read the book
