SPOILER...not a major one, but if you're not interested at all in the plot, do not click on this link . The article is a bit long, but worth it.
This is about Cillian's character: Dr. Crane is an important albeit secondary character who plays a key role in the ultimate plot against Gotham. While the Scarecrow's fear toxin is utilized in the story, Crane himself is not exactly running around in a burlap sack with straw sticking out of him. I was surprised that Crane worked at all as he's exactly the kind of character that Schumacher and Goldsman would've gone campy with. Cillian Murphy initially seemed like an offbeat choice for the role but, after reading this draft, he's quite an inspired pick.

From Batman-on-Film:
Tuesday, March 23, 2004, 7:56 PM CST: This in from our excellent inside source "M.B." Today, he has a brief description of the mask that will be worn briefly by Jonathan Crane (Cillian Murphy) in BATMAN BEGINS....
Thought I would give you the head's up on some info I've got--a concept drawing of The Scarecrow in FULL costume. [It seems] The Scarecrow will appear in FULL costume during a [fear gas induced] hallucination towards the end -- Arkham perhaps. Also got to see a pic of the actual mask--let me say this thing is f'ing disturbing; really, this thing will scare the s##t out of you. It's a very dark drown, it had no hat and no hat will be with the sack. The eye holes were scary to look at with no eyes, so what they will look like with eyes is anyone's guess. But rest assured, this mask fits in well with the other costumes I've seen, [as it] doesn't look stupid or comical--this thing it disturbing.
