yeah, i figured the 1st three were charcoal... its just manipulated in a very unique way... ugh soo awesome... *growls jealously* All I do is take vine charcoal, smudge it into a paper with not too much tooth, add darker and harder charcoal to some areas, and use a kneaded eraser to lighten other areas. They take about 6 hours each.

Materials really do matter...not enough tooth and you'll slide around too much. Some people like textured paper, but I have a hard time with it. A friend of mine made me some paper coated with volcanic ash and I don't know what to do with it...it's rough like sandpaper And honestly, practice is the way to go. And look at a lot of different art. Take frequent museum trips and brush up on art history. It all helps define your own style.

I've been using the brand Utrecht medium tooth drawing paper. Art history is way cool. I'm really into 19th century painting and romanticism. Delacroix is one of my favorite painters and I've just started reading the writings from his journal. I find it very funny because he reminds me much of myself: Sunday, 4 April [1824] Everything tells me that I need to live a more solitary life. 14 May [1824] Loneliness is the torment of my soul. Hahaha.

haha, the tortured artist type *shakes head* no, juuust kidding (i know too many to jest ;D) delacroix is great, no denying it... im more of a baroque period person... caravaggio, the sculpture (ah, i have this huge thing for rodin and camille claudel, shes kindof my at the moment art obsession...) no, in general im probably more of a modern(ish) art person.. fridah kahlo (talk about tormented artist type...); big surrealist fan... i dunno, im tired i cant really think of names right now, but i will... you know... there are hardy any movemenets that i detest, so its hard to generalize or be specific... but you cant deny the greats at all... and thanks for the recommendation... theres an utrecht a couple of blocks away.. im excited now, haha ;D

I'm not a tortured artist. I'm just ridiculous.
There's actually a Rodin exhibit going on in the museum on my college campus. I went to go see it yesterday but the museum was closed because we got a lot of snow.
Are you familiar with the artist Bo Bartlett?

*Is jealous* I'm surrounded by talented realists. I've tried to work with charcoal, but I had 0 idea what I was supposed to do. So, of course, I just ended up black and my paper a huge mess. *Goes back to drawing comics with my mechanical pencil*
Ima try what Hev suggested, though. Sounds good to me.
