I'll apologize up front for what has become a somewhat long post.
I just want to add a few comments to answer some of the questions that everyone has.
WRT the hair - I don't know what Cillian does to his hair but it didn't look like extensions to me. He went by me a few times and the back of his hair had that scraggly/I missed my hair appointment look to it. I have a friend who had extensions in her hair and I would have expected his hair to be neater and fuller at the back if he had extensions in it. When I first saw him I did wonder how he could be playing a physicist with the long hair as the part brings to mind a white lab coat and short hair. Now I'm thinking maybe he's playing a hip physicist with a ponytail. I noticed in the publicity pics that he's wearing what appears to be a ponytail elastic on his wrist - that's what I do with mine.
To add to Angela's post:
The whole bathroom thing happened when the movie was over. He didn't leave during the movie.
Cillian was very nervous when he first got up on stage to answer questions. He did the cute errhm thing and stammered a bit before getting his first answer out. I think Angela's talked about his questions but as I recall he was asked:
What preparations he did for the part - he answered that he hung out with transvestites and did a lot of grooming.
How he felt seeing the movie with an audience - He said it was his first time seeing the movie and he had used his time in the bathroom to process his thoughts.
Whether he got to keep the outfits. He said no but he did enjoy wearing them. LOL - maybe too much information.
How he felt about doing intimate scenes with men. He answered that he just tries to serve the character and do what the character would do and that he didn't make any judgments on the orientation of the character.
Neil Jordan said that he tested Cillian for this part four years ago.
For everyone on the site who's under 18 and wants to see the movie feel free to go with your parents. I don't recall there being any real sex in the book and certainly nothing explicit - again it's been a few years since I read the book so anyone who's read it more recently can feel free to correct me. Without giving away anything for anyone who hasn't read the book or seen the movie, there was one scene in the book involving Kitten (I'll use that name) and a guy who picked him up in his car. That scene is in the movie however Cillian keeps his clothes on. Angela is right that there are intimate moments in the movie, particularly between Cillian and Gavin Friday (who is very good for someone who hasn't acted before) but there is no sex and no kissing. The closest the movie comes to sex is the scene with Liam Neeson and Eva Birthwistle (sp) who plays Kitten's mother and they both have all their clothes on. The only nudity in the film, if you don't count Cillian flashing his nipple, is a woman in the peepshow who is wearing a see through top. The violent incidents that I remember from the book are all in movie. Neil Jordan does a good job mixing the violence with the humour. There's nothing gratuitous about the violence, it's all short and to the point. There are no XXX style shootouts or anything. The bottom line is the movie is about Kitten looking for his mother and the somewhat madcap and offbeat journey he takes to get there. There is no reference in the movie to Kitten having a psychiatrist but Neil Jordan and Cillian paint a portrait of someone who lives in a different reality from the rest of us.
There are comments on other threads about the pictures on the Sony site. Brendan Gleeson is indeed wearing a mouse costume. *Spoiler Alert*. Sorry, I can't help myself but typing that just brought the scene back into my head. It involves Cillian wiggling his bum for the camera. Now that you've all got that image in your head I'll go on.
Now that I've had a few days to let the experience sink in I'll give my impression of Cillian and the movie.
I really enjoyed the movie. I would guess that the theatre holds a minimum of 500 people, it was full and judging by the reception the movie got, they all enjoyed it. Neil Jordan totally impressed me with the screenplay. This is the best material that Cillian has had to work with and he completely rises to the occasion. The movie is a good mix of comedy and drama and captures the spirit of the book. At two hours and 15 minutes long it never felt it like a long movie. Cillian is in almost every scene. All of the supporting cast have what amounts to extended cameos. I have only two minor problems with the movie. There's a sequence involving Stephen Rea. Most of it is fine but at the end was the one point where the humour didn't seem to work and the movie dragged a bit. Like the critic from Variety I did have a few problems with Cillian's voice coming out in a bit too much of a whisper at times. I assume that the Variety critic hasn't read the book because I wasn't expecting the growth or insight that he seems to have found lacking. Without giving anything away, I did like the way that Neil Jordan handled the ending of the movie and for me Kitten's actions were all the growth and insight I was looking for.
Although this is a movie about a transvestite there is nothing garish or over the top in the portrayal of Kitten.
The music for the movie was spot on, it was totally camp sixties and seventies throw away tunes that fit in perfectly with the mood. Neil Jordan said he is hoping to have a soundtrack out. The costumes were good, Cillian got to wear some interesting 70s outfits (think platform boots and wide leg pants).
As for Cillian, he is as perfect in person as he is in pictures. Everyone talks about the eyes but I have to give the lips equal time. Forget how does he get his hair to grow. How does he get lips that full. When he was up on stage I couldn't take my eyes off them. He clearly has a sense of humour and doesn't take himself too seriously and once he got over his first stage jitters he was articulate and thoughtful with his answers. I don't know how tall he is but he's average (if I can use that word to describe him) enough in height that when you see him you don't think about how tall he is (or isn't). The same can't be said for his weight because you cannot help but notice how incredibly skinny he is.
OMG. I just previewed my post and I'm really sorry if it's too long.

Nice and in depth. I like. I need to go see this movie? I wonder if any of the people at the screenings recorded it You seem like you've got it all figured out -- do you know when the exact release dates are, when and where, and if it will be in more places than just LA and NY?

I'm sure people wish they could have recorded the movie. There was an announcement to turn off all devices and a very in-your-face commercial before the movie about not recording anything.
The movie is supposed to come out on November 18. To be honest I doubt that this movie will get a wide release. Usually when something is in limited release it opens in NY and LA and then opens in smaller cities in the weeks after that.

I haven't seen the book in any stores. They may re-release it when the movie comes out otherwise you'll have to order it online.

GAH. I went and it was a LOVELY film. I honestly think Cillian is on Oscar grounds with this movie.
Aside from that: I'd offer a review but everyone beat me to it. I didn't see him outside smoking, but I did catch Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst at Much Music.
my GOD the ladies go wild for Orlando D: (My sister included)
As for autographs, I don't collect them either. I think they're silly. The only autograph I ever got was when I met seth green at a silverchair concert by accident and at the end of our conversation he grabbed my wrist and asked me if I had a pen---which I did---and then proceeded to draw a little heart with his name.
Celebrities can be a bit odd at times ^_^ But I guess that's their job,

Oh I agree - I noticed that mouth 1st in BB - then his absolutely beautiful face (I have a thing for the square shaped face) & then his eyes which, to be fair, were hidden behind those glasses at first. Yeah - the lips do me in every time. As for the book - I borrowed a copy from my local library so those of you looking may want to try yours. And those of you who went - any pics? Thanx.
