I just watched "28 Days Later" a few days ago and it made me think. Jim went from being pretty helpless in the beginning to taking on basically a whole military unit at the end of the film.
Before the commander tells Jim the "deal" he made with his soldiers, Jim clearly is torn up with having to kill an infected boy even though it was a matter of survival.
After Jim learns of the "deal" and after the execution scene, Jim kills the soldiers without hesitation. I was thinking about what occured for such a drastic change in Jim. Surely it was more than self-defense or survival since the boy qualified for that as well. I think it had to do with several things:
1. More than protecting his own life, he wanted to protect and save Selina and Hannah.
2. He realizes the soldiers are the "true" monsters more than the infected because they are conscious of the evil they are doing.
What are your thoughts on this?

Well, spoilers, but the commander supposedly promised his men women so they would have hope for the future. Personally I think it's just so the soldiers could get laid. Anyway, the deal was sicko because the women had no say in whether they wanted to have anything to do with the soldiers or not ... and why would they when they had Jim around? I think that's why they had to get rid of Jim. Masculine perfection ... just can't compete with that.

So they wanted to get rid of Jim because they knew the women would choose him over the soldiers? But I thought the women didn't have a say...I'm confused.

2. He realizes the soldiers are the "true" monsters more than the infected because they are conscious of the evil they are doing. Yes, that's the ironic thing about it, the uninfected are just as dangerous.

I agree that his breaking point came when he realized what was going to happen to Selina and Hannah. I also agree with your insight about the soldiers being the real monsters because they are choosing to do evil, whereas the infected have no choice.
I think this kind of breaking point happens a lot in war. There is only so much violence and blood you can take without being affected deeply.
I also think that since he had put so much hope into finding that military base (the idea that they would finally have someone to protect them, etc) only to have it turn into a bigger nightmare than dealing with the infected, well, that kind of let down is emotionally powerful. I think that as long as he felt there would be someone to "protect" them, they would be ok. Once he realized there was *no one*, he gave in to the primal survival instinct (ironically, the rage that the scientists were trying to understand, the rage that's in all of us).

I think this side of him made him oh so yummy! I mean to have a guy defend you to the point where he is risking his life AND is forced to kill....woo hooo! did that get my heart pumping and he was SO good at it, very sneaky, clever and strong! ;D Yeah I got idea that they wanted to kill Jim b/c they knew he would not let the soldiers rape the women. Sorry if that's kind of a DUH comment, lol

Yes, he was incredible during the rescue and he looked especially yum shirtless in the rain.

it's funny that the primal instinct is so strong in times of great horror

You have to admit that after he kills that one soldier and Selena is trying to decide whether or not to machete Jim (thinking he was infected) he was pretty hot. He steps forward within striking distance of her machete and did that pant and said "That was more than a heartbeat." Oh, yeah, that kiss afterward was something too! ;D
