If watched closely, the character change in the film is astounding. Think about it, his physical appearance changes from scruffy to cleanshaven and able to move easier, he goes from cynical, to caring (when he meets the family in the city), to ruthless, to resourceful in the end. It's like a die, all the different sides being rolled as transitions from scene to scene. The symmetry comes when one can no longer notice the exact changes in persona, but there is a flow to his character that allows him to be so versitile. The only rough change I saw, but expected was his change from being led to his death and being infected, for they do not focus only on his journey and one cannot see some of the ordeal he undergoes to go back to base. That, in my opinion is most brilliant about the film. Excellent synopsis - was thinking along the same lines - he became quite adept at handling himself & the situation by the end - a bit scary even.
