Yeah. After Jim came back after all that, that jackass shot him. But then again, the captain got taken away by an infected.

oh my...if i ever have to see that, i'm going to be darn depressed. the whole ending was such a bright point for me, to think that people could actually survive with each other and not have to resort to eating dogs for food or killing each other or anything like you see in other apocalypse survival movies...if Jim dies, that just kills the whole redemption-feeling for me. sometimes you need a happy ending!

Yeah, it stinks after all he's been through surviving the infected he gets killed at the very end by that ass**** captain in the alternate ending. I know there's that whole he sacrificed his life to save theirs, but it's still very depressing. I like the way it works out better in the theatrical version ... plus Jim finally gets to celebrate with Selena when they are rescued. Hmmm....I must've missed this theatrical ending where the two get to celebrate? Where is it? What am I missing?

You won't find that anywhere ... the celebration occurs in my own twisted imagination

Yeah, I also think it was because he wanted to save Hanah and Selena. And also because he lost his real father, the father figure he found in Hanah's dad and when he kind of thought of that captain dude as his new father figure. And normally a father figure doesn't wants to execute you and let other rape two girls. So he snapped. But hey, who can blame him?

If watched closely, the character change in the film is astounding. Think about it, his physical appearance changes from scruffy to cleanshaven and able to move easier, he goes from cynical, to caring (when he meets the family in the city), to ruthless, to resourceful in the end. It's like a die, all the different sides being rolled as transitions from scene to scene. The symmetry comes when one can no longer notice the exact changes in persona, but there is a flow to his character that allows him to be so versitile. The only rough change I saw, but expected was his change from being led to his death and being infected, for they do not focus only on his journey and one cannot see some of the ordeal he undergoes to go back to base.
That, in my opinion is most brilliant about the film.
