i think my readership will drop for Crane being so terrible to poor Cata!
_________
Chapter 9.
Catalina woke up around seven at night. She came home and washed her makeup off before she fell into her bed. She didn't
change from her work clothes before she took her long nap.
She fixed her hair, not in the mood to reapply her makeup. She wasn't very anxious for Crane
to come back here again, not after earlier. When she heard the buzz at her door, she reluctantly let him up. He came to
her door dressed as he was earlier. He was carrying his suitcase and a large, brown bag.
"How are you? Better, I hope!"
He laughed as he put the bag in her kitchen. Cata sat down at a seat facing the kitchen.
"I got us Italian. You don't mind, right?"
She shook her head as he placed a styrofoam container of chicken parmasean in front of her with a plastic fork.
"I'm not really hungry..."
"Just try a little of it."
She cut off a bit of the chicken and ate it. It was good, but it didn't make her hungrier.
"You brought me this food, but now I don't even want it."
She put the container into her refrigerator.
Crane brought up his suitcase and opened it.
"Then, can I show you something?"
"What is it?"
Crane pulled out a burlap mask, covered with stitches.
"It's part of a new study. To see how patients react to being scared."
He put the mask on, and Catalina felt fearful. She got out of her chair and walked to the back of her sofa.
"And I really came here...to test it on you." His voice had changed to a frigtening tone, and she backed away from the doctor.
Her heart raced as the man that was once Crane reached out for her and grabbed her arms roughly. She looked into it's eyes
and no longer saw anyone familiar.
Why won't she scream, he thought.
He pulled her back to the counter, Cata was sobbing in his hard grip. She tried to pull away, but he wouldn't let go of her.
He pressed something in his suitcase and she screamed as the gas filled her surroundings. The scream echoed through the whole apartment,
and Crane smiled from underneath his mask. He was protected from the smoke. Cata fell on the floor, breathing heavily.
He picked her up and placed her on the nearby sofa before he left.
~
Cata sat in a corner of her living room. Last night had been a terrible night. She knew she shouldn't have brought him over.
She fell asleep again, but was awoken by a phone ringing.
"Hello?" Her voice shook violently, speaking in a near whisper.
"Hi Catalina."
She couldn't hang up on him.
"What did you do to me?"
"Fear gas. I guess it works. I love how you scream, more than I love that look of terror on your face."
She shook her head.
"Why me?"
"You're so accessible...I see you everyday. And since we started dating, I knew you trusted me. Right?"
Catalina was sickened. She had trusted him.
"Y-Yes."
He laughed over the phone.
"Get some rest. You'll need it."
She slammed the phone back down onto the reciever and stood up. Her legs quivered as she looked amongst her house.
She noticed her keys were gone. All of them, to her car, to her house. She got more fearful. He could be anywhere with
her keys, wondering how afraid she is. She went back to her bed and fell asleep, horrified.
~
When she reawoke, it was dark again. She heard nothing throughout the apartment, and crept out of her room cautiously.
There were no lights on, and she didn't see any figures. She turned on one lamp and breathed a sigh of relief. Crane wasn't
there, but she still wanted her keys back. He had made her a prisoner in her own home, unable to leave.
The phone rang again. She wasn't going to pick it up. She just let the answering machine pick up the call.
"This is Catalina's house, I'm probably out. Leave your name and number and I'll get back to you ASAP!"
"Listen, Miss Williams. I know you are home. Where else would you go? I know you are awake as well."
She sat down on the floor in her kitchen and kept listening. Her heart was beating faster at the mere notion Crane knew
her movements.
"I've already stopped by your little place and you are a very cute sleeper. You didn't wake up when I touched your hair..."
Catalina swallowed hard at the mere thought of it.
"...but I'm coming back soon. And maybe I'll bring you something pretty."
He hung up and she sat in complete silence. She looked up at her dead roses that he had bought her when he was still sane.
