Okay, this is gonna be short-- and not just because I just drank a pint o' Guinness WAY TOO FAST--
Trip highlights (details to follow):
Tuesday: Stage door: He's running late. He apologizes to us for not having time to sign. Asks if it's okay if he signs after the show. Which it was-- but wasn't-- as we had tickets for "The 39 Steps" (funnier than hell on a funny, funny day, by the way). Voice of Reason notes-- once we are safely away-- that his beard and his face seem more in agreement with one another. Things are smoother and more trimmed.
Wednesday: "BLIZZARD" THREATENS LONDON--!! (Read: One inch of apathetic wet snow that melts completely by nine a.m.). Anyway-- Another night at the stage-door fence. Cillian comes over apologizing for not meeting us after the previous night's performance. We... CHAT. (Details later, yep....!) [And we met Patrick Stewart post-"Anthony." It's getting cold. I tell him to keep his cap on.]
Thursday: We see the show. We don't see him ahead of time. See, Thursday's a matinee day, and this particular Thursday was colder than snot by London standards, and we think Mr. Murphy stayed inside at the Ambassadors with his iPod. Chatted with Kristen Johnston. Coolness.
Friday: Mob of continentals pre-show, and it's cold. We keep our distance and get nods from Kristen and Neve. But... POST-SHOW: He's working his way down the line; he nods toward a handler and says, "Be there in a minute." He gets to me; I say, "Just wanted to say good night and take care-- and have you heard anything about those awards yet?" To which he responds with a sort of sidewise aww-shucks smile and an "Aww, no." Then he shakes my hand. He doesn't let go right away; he's got a square large hand and a good warm grip. He says, "See you again sometime, yeah?"-- and he smiles at me and goes off to do a few photos with other folks. And, yeah, I'm good.
And that's not just the Guinness talking.
(And, uh, photos to follow.)
