I just don't get it. The board consensus seems to be "Oh, I could never approach him." "I could never dream of bothering him." "I'd die if I actually met him." No one would think of going up to him out of simple friendliness, or simple human concern, and saying, "Hey, Cillian, how's it going?" And then someone cooks up a big ol' pot of sleaze, and you're all "Oh, brilliant!" I really don't get why some people have to automatically be so quick to negatively judge others - just because said people happen to have different feelings/opinions on a subject to them - but then there you go. I guess life is full of mysteries! Anyways Melty Girl, many thanks for posting the link to your story! Will be sure to check it out

It is possible to disagree with someone - whilst maintaining a polite/respectful manner towards them at the same time. Obviously some people have a hard time understanding such a concept. Anyways I haven't read Melty Girls story just yet. Doubt I'll have the time today - so have no comment on that.

I know how it's done, emma. Please feel free to refer to me as "you" when we're in the same thread. Lends more of a face-to-face aspect to the proceedings. No need to say "some people" when the "person" at whom you're upset is-- virtually-- right here.
In any case, I was pulling the thread further off-topic. I apologize.

To re-post my question:
Cillian: Has your lack of formal training limited your choice of roles, or been a limiting factor in terms of the roles you've been offered? Would you consider taking a year or two off from filmmaking to hone your skills, say, as an understudy in the Royal Shakespeare Company?

When I said 'some people' I wasn't referring to only you. I've noticed a number of other internet users post things in a similiar manner to you when it's come to disagreements/debates (not just on this forum) and have to say it is the kind of thing that tends to irk me from time to time. Admittedly it would have been better if I'd made myself clearer there - and pointed out that I was thinking aloud about more than one person. But yes I'm happy to do that of course, and if that apology was directed at me then no probs. Anyways, think I'll also post another question! 'Can you pick any particular favourites - out of all the directors you've so far worked with? And if so tell me why it is they made such an impression on you?'

I'd rather read a "bit ol pot of sleaze" than much of the mean spirited crud that gets put on these boards.

I am genuinely concerned for that man's well being. That photo of him at the movies is heart breaking. The grin is because I know that you don't like me to criticize him. I look at that picture and I'll tell you what I see: a very pale , painfully thin man who has aged overnight. If your husband, family member or friend looked so poorly wouldn't you intervene? Where is his family? Friends?

Where is his family? Friends? Which picture is it you're referring to Seabreeze? (so long as you don't mind sharing of course). Was that the one recently posted in the photo thread of Cillian in London? Or is this another picture? I'd be perfectly happy to check it out also - just to get a clearer idea of what you mean. Not discounting your comments at all, but at the same time curious to see this for myself. Further edit: Ah, just re-read your post about it being at the Toronto film festival. There's my answer. I'll hunt around and see what I can find online about that.

Ok Seabreeze, I've checked around a little and as far as I can fathom this film festival (assuming you are meaning the one for the Perriers Bounty Premiere) hasn't even started to take place yet. As far as Im aware it doesn't start till the 10th September and then runs through till the 19th. It's only the 8th today. So again am a little confused. Just out of curiosity, wondering where it was you saw that photo? And are you sure it was definitely supposed to be at that particular film festival?

Hmm. I'll grant you that again - as with other pics of him - he does look pretty thin. But don't feel it's the kind of photo from which you can tell much from either way. Have to say though, with that other recent picture of him in Ireland I couldn't see anything that gave the impression he was suffering from health problems. I think maybe he's just the type of person who has a hard time putting on weight easily in general. Some people (take an example such as Nicole Kidman or Keira Knightley) often look (in my opinion anyways) as if they're unaturally thin - but it really is just the way they are and has nothing to do with any serious illness. Again, honestly not discounting your comments ;-) But again at this point, can't see anything about that picture that is proper evidence to go by is all. Still, I'm sure plenty of new recent pics of how he is looking will soon be available - once the Toronto movie festival has started to take place! And then we'll be able to tell more.

I'd rather read a "bit ol pot of sleaze" than much of the mean spirited crud that gets put on these boards. Completely agree. I also don't see how appreciating fan fic and being able to approach someone in person are relateable to each other. It is also pretty rude to call someone's creative writing a big ol' pot of sleaze. I haven't read it yet but have you? If it's not your cup of tea fine but you shouldn't publicly criticize someone else's form of creative expression just because it's something you don't agree with it.

I have now managed to look at some of Melty Girls story and - at risk of offending some of the others here in this thread - so far I think it's a very well written piece of work. I also don't see what Melty Girl is doing that is so wrong - considering that she wrote a disclaimer and also is not trying to get that stuff published or anything. It's just something she wrote for a bit of fun and enjoyment. As Larva said, if it's not your personal cup of tea then fair do's. But as far as I can tell, there's nothing illegal about it.

Emma--
If it appears on the 'net, technically it is considered "published," even if licensing, copyright, and monetary factors don't come into play. Paramount Pictures, for example, regularly exercises its rights to squelch "Star Trek" fan fic, even though no money changes hands. Two years ago, Twentieth Century-Fox exercised its rights to remove fan videos related to "Sunshine," even though no money changed hands there-- and even though the extra publicity could only have helped the film. If you keep something in a folder on your desktop, or on paper, it's not published. The second you park the contents of that folder on LiveJournal or Fanfic.net, those contents are published.
Some of "us" maybe don't appreciate porn as much as we should, as our membership in the Great Anonymity of the Internet would seem to dictate. I just find it odd that if "we" (the faceless, semi-nameless "we") point out that "real" Cillian (there was a sale on quotation marks at Sam's Club, so I stocked up) looks like he's in need of a sandwich (or seven), a shower, and a nap, we're accused of rank speculation. But if someone else writes-- all in the name of fantasy-- about Cillian's tongue being stuck in Naomie Harris's whazoo, that's perfectly fine and dandy and a valid form of expression.
Yes, Melty_Girl is a good writer. I'm simply and elementally uncomfortable with Cillian being presented, by name, in pornographic scenarios, even as fantasy. Or fantasies that find their way onto the great and murky 'net, anyway. Seems there are topics better suited to the light of day.
Then again, I'm beginning to suspect I'm far too old for the chatboard world. I was a late bloomer, computer-wise.
*****
As long as I'm here, and once we had a topic in this thread:
Cillian: If you could change the ending of any film in which you've appeared, which film would it be, and how would the new ending play out?
