The Landmark folks forwarded us Fund:It people a .pdf of the program as part of our reward goodies... and my name is spelled correctly in the credits...! Yay! (Yes: this officially qualifies as a "cheap thrill." But after decades of "creative" spellings on rosters, contact lists, and whatnot, I get my kicks where and when I can. Oh, and seeing the ol' moniker with all the others really makes me want to break into a chorus of "One of these things is not like the others/ One of these things just doesn't belong...." ) Four days and counting...!

(Now that my internet connection is no longer moving at quadriplegic glacial speed-- gee, thanks, Earthlink-- a page from the program .pdf--) Thought this was fun: a variation on the "dog photo" (Mr. Heinz 57's got that lovably homely thing coming and going, doesn't he...?), and-- answering a question that I had, anyway, regarding a certain little one's name-- the "special thanks" brigade:

The sad thing is that I could probably swing the airfare... if I wanted to set myself back on paying down the household debt by about a year or so. LOL. (SIGH) Being responsible sucks.

Reminds me of my mom. My mom loved rhinos. Favorite animal in the whole world. So, back in 2004, after I got firmer footing here in the editorial caldera of The Pit, I thought, Hell, let's go see some rhinos. We don't have any at the Minnesota Zoo; going to Africa seemed a bit extreme. So I booked a trip for Mom and me to San Diego, to the Wild Animal Park. Y'know, where they take you out in the big white safari trucks, and the rhinos and giraffes come begging for apples. Anyway, two weeks before we were scheduled to leave, Mom, as older folks are wont to do, went to have her blood pressure checked. And the doctor told her that she could hear a "roughness" in the arteries in Mom's neck. Time to get those suckers chopped open and bottle-brushed, right? So Mom did the responsible thing: she scheduled her first appointment with the vein specialist-- and we canceled our trip. I mean, we could have gone-- she'd been living with the condition, as the doctor said, for some time, and she still had good blood-flow through those arteries-- but she decided to hold off on the rhinos and get her neck fixed. The smart choice, right? She had the first surgery done, and she hated it (we don't take kindly to feeling laid-up in our family). But it turned out fine. A few weeks later, she had the second side done, and even though the hospital effed up royally one night and gave her an Ativan because she couldn't get to sleep (big tip: if you're over fifty, don't take that crap: it will-- literally-- make you temporarily insane), that side turned out okay, too. ***** Six months later, in June 2005, she died, quite suddenly, of sepsis brought on by an intestinal blockage. ***** The moral of the story? If I have a choice and a chance, I'm gonna go see the rhinos. Every damn time. Because it's just.... pfft!... and we're gone. Just like that. ****** Anyway-- this sort of ties in-- here's the "Angel" clip that we received as part of our Fund:It rewards. If the "special thanks" credits in the program are any indication, that's Dawn Upshaw doing the vocals. Enjoy! www.yousendit.com/download/cnJqRE9vNHY1Ujd2Wmc9PQ
